Little miss Mary, we will miss you. You were always so full of energy and laughter. You were such a sweet little girl with an adorable smile. You grew into a great sassy little teenager. Everyone in our family regarded all the children as our own. The hours we spent in the Oak Avenue living room watching these wonderful children grow. We loved and nurtured each of them.
“Our Mary” We’ll be forever greatful that you babysat our children for four consecutive summers. They were lucky enough to have a fun older cousin who always had lots of daily activities planned. You took time to make a bucket list with them so they could each add their special summer plans. Despite the fact that we teased you about leaving all your stuff everywhere, making a mess wherever you went and getting into many car accidents, you were a responsible young girl that we trusted and loved. Our children will forever have a missing piece in their hearts without their cousin Mary. We are deeply saddened for this.
Mary, you loved us all and we knew and felt that every time we were with you.
We will miss you sweet girl.

This is going to be long, and I want to start by saying that my heart is aching for Michele, Art, Raymund, and all of Mary’s family. For all of us who knew her, Mary’s death is shocking and grievous, and for many, many reasons. She was so young and strong, and her death is so difficult to make sense of as a part of the natural and expected order to life. But even more than these self-evident things, it feels horribly unfair to have lost her, Mary Cronin the person, and all those qualities that were her constituent parts, a loss we would feel at any age and in any circumstance. I won’t pretend to have had a special relationship with Mary. Although I have known her from birth, I was, at best, a fairly absent-minded, third rate, fictive aunt for her. My particular insights come from seeing Mary through the eyes of her mother, who regarded her with deep love, endless pride, and a kind of marvelling wonder. In my professional life, I have often aspired to having an objective, critical gaze, and I can say that even though I am biased by Michele, Mary was truly remarkable. All week I have been groping for words to capture her, to explain to people why this occurrence is so significant and terrible for all of us, and I felt deeply inadequate to the task. Confounding my efforts, throughout the week Mary has felt so present - her lips naturally in a grin, her eyes twinkling and merry, like she had just spotted something hilarious and tease-worthy. If some of us have “resting bitch face”, Mary had resting imp face. She had such a strong presence and a way of being in the world - the manner in which she would come into a room, fearless and brimming with confidence in her own strength and intellect, her tendency to throw her whole being into whatever she was doing to the point of injury (especially but not only in sports), the way she was with her family and friends, perpetually willing to be delighted, lovingly teasing those she loved. She became thoroughly absorbed in whatever she did – soccer, relationships, school – she was wholly engaged – “all-in”. Although she was clever and quick to feel joy and satisfaction, she was also wise, and although humour (particular in these times) can be tempered with cynicism and anger, she was genuinely compassionate and without meanness. In the many tributes to her this past week, people have talked about how they knew that she would become a transformative leader, and that seems so very resonant to me. She had talent and self-knowledge that seemed like a destiny to change the world. All of my life she will be brought back to me again and again – when I see a little girl with strawberry blonde curls and rosy cheeks, in the tilt of the head or a flash of a mischievous smile of a stranger, or a spectacular save on the soccer pitch. When this happens, I think we will all know that of all those who walk this earth, we were the lucky ones whose lives intersected with hers.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Mary's passing. I couldn't have been more blessed as a teacher, to have met and known both Mary and Ray. (I still have the little TY cat stuffie that Ray gave me the year I lost my 15year old Oliver.) I can only imagine your grief, having just lost my father... I can't imagine the pain of losing a child. Hug tight your memories of Mary. I pray they bring each of you solace during this time. Thinking of you, Beth Hubley.

I read and reread the CBC story and it is abundantly clear she had an amazing impact on many people in such a short period. I had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Mary as a teacher of hers at FHS and while she was playing soccer there (I was coaching many of her friends on the boys' team). To say she had personality is an understatement. To say she brought positive energy wherever she went doesn't do her justice. Mary was the type of student that made classes better, made me better as a teacher, and brought so many of her peers along with her to a better place. I looked forward to her class and to her pop in visits. Yes, she was fun to have around, but she would always have something to share, whether it was a silly or witty observation that got us going, a sarcastic or sassy comment (usually at my expense with an impish glint in her eye!) that broke the ice and once again, got us going, or just the vivacious presence of her and her friends as they entered the room. While I cannot imagine the grief this is causing those of you who were closer than I was to Mary, as a coach and teacher I find myself reflecting on how we work to help such wonderful young people grow. We keep tabs on them, celebrating their accomplishments and perking up when we hear news of their lives becoming fuller and richer with the promise of their potential. To lose Mary is tragic in the purest sense. We mourn the loss of her no matter the connection we had. But I am reminded just how important she was to the people privileged enough to know her even for a fleeting time. She made life better for those around her - I was fortunate to be witness and benefactor of this, which has in turn been paid forward to countless other students and athletes. Thank you to her family for sharing her with us. My deepest love and condolences to you. Please take comfort in knowing what a blessing your daughter was.

Michele, Art and Family. My sincerest condolences to you at this time. I loved hearing all about Mary's many activities, accomplishments and talents - I know she took after her mom. Every time you spoke of her you were so proud and your face lit up. I hope that your many happy memories of your precious beautiful daughter will help get you thru the days ahead. I will be thinking of you with the biggest hugs wrapped around you always xoxo
