Obituary of Shirley Harper

 

Ann (Shirley) Harper passed away peacefully at the York Care Centre on Friday, January 1st, 2021.  She was the daughter of the late Byron and Muriel Evans and the wife of the late Sterling Harper.  Shirley was born on Feb. 10, 1923 in Nashwaaksis, New Brunswick.  A true Nashwaaksis girl she was born and passed on Sunset Dr.

Shirley, like her two sisters, was a registered nurse having graduated from the Victoria Public Hospital in Fredericton.  She continued her nursing education at the University of Toronto before returning to New Brunswick for a long and distinguished career in Public Health.

She was a strong and determined lady, having raised two sons by herself, while advancing her career through extensive field experience, and then to senior positions with the department of Public Health.  After retiring, Shirley travelled with her sister Louise and friends to many parts of the world with special admiration for Scandinavia and New Zealand.

Shirley was a long-time member of the Nashwaaksis United Church and proud member of the UCW, New Brunswick Welsh Society and retired Nurses of New Brunswick.  Survived by her son Jim and wife Connie Harper of Calgary, AB, grandchildren Matthew Harper, Jessica Harper, Harrison Harper, and daughter-in-law Susan Harper.  Shirley was predeceased by her parents, husband, and son Evans Harper.  The last of her immediate family, she was also predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Eileen, Louise, Gerald, Waldo and Arleigh.

Honoring Shirley’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com.
