I'm sorry to hear of Mr. Layden, or "Bill's" death.
I was his student from 1980 - 1983.
He was always a gentleman. Never once did I see him flustered although I'm sure my class could be frustrating at times.
My condolences to you, his family. May your memories bring you comfort in the day's to come.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Mr. Layden was one of my favorite teachers of all times. His passion for English and Shakespeare was well known. He took his job very seriously but also was a kind soul. They say someone who copies you is one of the most sincere types of flattery...so i enjoyed when we had winter carnival and I dressed as one of my favorites. Known for sporting some cordoroy pants and a vest this teacher was an inspiration to all the lives of the students he taught. He will be missed. May time heal your sorrow and know that he has planted seeds of knowledge that will go on for years. My thoughts and prayers to your family.

Mr. Layden was quite an influence in my youth. I did not do better than average in the math or sciences. I excelled in Literature and History. In highschool I wondered what kind of job I would ever find as I didn't want to be a teacher or a civil servant. Mr. Layden instilled the belief in me that I would find my niche - because of the qualities I manifested in my writing I suppose. I've had two successful careers - one in ad writing and the much more fulfilling one and longer lasting as a Social Worker. I'll always be grateful to Mr. Layden for his encouraging words.

My Deepest Sympathies to All of Mr. Laydens Family
I to had the privilege of having Mr. Layden as one of my teachers in Grades 10, 11 & 12 at U.M.R.H.S. He was a great teacher and also a great man. He was one of my teachers I have never forgotten. I have lived in Riverview, N.B. since I graduated in 1977. I was very excited when I realized there was another Mr. Layden teaching here and he was a brother to U.M.R.H.S s' Bill Layden !!
As you can tell from the many students of U.M.R.H.S s' comments, Mr. Layden was very well liked and respected.
God Bless all of you during this difficult time and in the days ahead.

As a former graduate of UMRHS, we were blessed to have many dedicated educators, one being Bill Layden.
He introduced hundreds of young Miramicher's to Dickens, Tennyson, Shakespeare, Burns, Poe, Service and Twain, just to name a few.
He taught us that one did not have to leave the comforts of home in order to travel anywhere in the universe, simply through literature.
My life is richer because of his teachings.
I close quoting Hamlet, 'may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.'

was very sad to hear of Mr. Laydens passing as he was always an uplifting person to talk to. I was never good at English class, Shakespeare especially. One day he couldn't get anyone to volunteer an answer to a question he had asked about our reading assignment, well he looked at me and asked me what my answer was. I said 'I don't know'. That was my answer the day before in class as well. He looked at me and said "that's right ! The reader is not supposed to know". I imagine he wanted me to get a correct answer in class for once :)
He made the classes he taught fun to go too.
Art class with him, for me, was the best. I'll never forget running into him 3-4 years ago at the art supply section of the $ store on main street. He recognized me and was excited to know I was buying art supplies for my nieces and nephew. I hope he knows how many younger generations (that he never taught) were still influenced by those he did teach :)
my love and prayers to the family :) xo

My deepest sympathies go out to the family of Mr. Layden. He was my teacher throughout High School for History and English. He always made his classes fun and engaging, having us act out scenes from Shakespeare encouraging us along the way. He would always cast himself as Caesar while carefully choosing who would play Brutus. Mr. Laden was a lovely man, funny and caring and as much a part of our community as those of us born and raised. He always had a sparkle in his eye when he would speak of Kelly. I sit with a heavy heart as I reminisce over times spent in his classes. Mr. Layden thank you for your wisdom, your encouragement, your laughter and your kind heart. You will be forever in our hearts. May you rest in peace and may your family find comfort in knowing how well respected, thought of and loved you were by our community.

I am deeply saddened by the recent passing of my most beloved high school teacher. Mr. Layden was an amazing educator and always filled his lessons with fun and laughter. I was fortunate to have him for English and History in Grades 10, 11, 12 as well as homeroom teacher in grade 12 at UMRHS. He had such a great sense of humour and always made time to chat with me about whatever books I was reading. I remember a wonderful discussion we had when I showed up in class one day with Jack Kerouac's "On The Road", he was surprised and impressed that someone in my generation would find it interesting. One of my favourite moments in his English class was when we were reading aloud from Shakespeare's Macbeth and he cast myself, Jennifer, and Tracey as the three witches. He thought it fitting since we were always cackling. After graduation, I went through a rough patch, and he sent me a letter to comfort me and lift my spirits, which included a self portrait of him writing said letter from his hospital bed. He went on to tell me that the reason he was in the hospital was because he suffered a heart attack most likely due to mowing the lawn in the sweltering heat while wearing his brown corduroy suit. Over the years, any time I ran into him somewhere (usually at the mall outside Chapters) we always had a great catch up chat. He had such a positive impact on me, more than he may have ever known. I am so thankful for his presence in my life, as teacher and friend. My deepest and sincerest condolences to his family.
