I was speaking to Norm Betts last Thursday about "old times" at UNB and asked about Ross. I was saddened to learn he had died 4 years ago to the day! Unfortunately, UNB Alumni News is not what it used to be so I was unaware of his passing.
Had I been able to attend the funeral, I could have told stories about Ross like some of our ski trips to Maine and Crabbe, bailing him out of a mess in Russia during our 1972 Business Society tour (he needed 200 rubles to pay for the buses which has not been prepaid) or his very interesting small business class. He was a fun guy but also a very practical professor.
We last spoke during the PC Leadership in 1997. He was tending the bar at Norm's hospitality suite. He was a candidate. We ran out of booze but he "found" some more! I think he was surprised I was not in jail but a politician myself (at the time)!
I have very fond memories of Ross.

My sincere condolences to the Darling family. Ross and I were room mates at UNB during the 60-61 year. I spent a long weekend at his home in Brockville during that summer when he worked at DuPont. we moved to seperate accommadation for subsequent years and lost touch after graduation. He was an interesting and fun friend to have, and I never forgot him. I too feel a loss at his passing.

Ross was the engaging colleague who did who did much to make the Faculty of Business Administration an enjoyable workplace. A mentor to many students and fine teacher. My memories of Ross will always go back to my first months at UNB in 1986. What do you say when your first exposure to the #2, our Assistant Dean, is at a student grog and he's wearing a costume moose-head, acting like it's a normal thing. Obviously: welcome, we're a teaching institution but believe in enjoying life. My second exposure was during hunting season when, as the tales went around the building, Ross managed to shoot up many of the province's stop signs but nary a moose. But then he sat me down and explained the intricacies of doing smoked meats right -- over numerous beers. For a young faculty member, he had helpful advice and then told me not to louse it up again, at least for the day. He gave me with the same advice when I went into the Deanery several years after his retirement. Gonna miss you, big guy. Pace.

Me and Ross
From the very first day at UNB Ross have been my friend, mentor and protector. Truly I do not know how I would survive this cultural transition without his and Jim Tolliver help. His somewhat special sense of humor allows defusing any crises without doing harm to those involved. Gourmet cook who introduce me to the art of deer liver preparation (by the way this was the only liver I would consume) which as everything in his live was just honest in ingredients (pound of batter plus pound of onions plus two packages of bacon) and incredibly tasty. He loved light side of the live and on these note three anecdotes:
1. Picture these: Ross under the table fixing something (as usual) in his office computer. Getting out from under the desk with his pants dirty at the knee level. KPK Nair at the door commenting: O, I see you have been to the Dean’s Office!
2. Ross, Jim Canning and myself day before the first day in classes. Computers are mounted on the tables in newly created computer lab but despite endless request Physical Plant did not drill several holes in the tables to run cables. Ross immediately offered help. Run to his house brought back drill and off we went. In few hours holes were drilled, cables run and lab has been opened and…..My Goodness we have created crises of unbelievable proportion. University almost went on strike because professors did what supposed to be unionized job. What saved us was the fact that Ross was assistant dean and I was his assistant so we claim that we are not Faculty but non-unionized administration.
3. After sabbatical trip to Australia he brought back lovely and charming wife Marie. Bev and Bob decided to have welcome dinner at the farm. Conversation was going extremely well until Bev proudly announced that especially for this occasion she prepared her signature dish: RABBIT – rest is in the silence.
I will always remember our fishing trips which were always about trips not fishing, his cottage in Ontario, opening of the hunting season for which we would stand for him in class, our time in Budapest with all tribe and tribulations, dentist chair in his mobile home, different pronunciation of my name depending of his disposition at the time, his loud and contingence laughter. I will truly miss him and I am enormously privilege to have him in my life and call him a true Friend. Rest in peace my Dear Ross.

Marie
I was saddened to read in this mornings paper that Ross had passed. Having known Ross for many years we shared some good times togrther always a good discussion about what was right and what was wrong he always won. We also liked to share ideas about how to prepare food I am not sure who came out ahead there.
Marie I am sure you are going to feel his passing most but as a friend I will always have fond memories. God Bless Allie Jewett
