Obituary of Valerie Beryl Porter

Please share a memory of Valerie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with profound sadness that the family of Valerie Beryl Porter of Nelson Hollow, NB, announces her passing on September 17, 2024, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, with family by her side. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and pillar of strength who impacted the lives of many with her generosity, home-baked goods and quick wit.

Born March 8, 1940, in Priceville, NB to Joseph and Edna (Harris) Price of Priceville, NB, Valerie lived a fulfilling and happy life, always ensuring the needs of her family were met and extending kindness to anyone fortunate enough to have crossed her path.

Family was Valerie’s pride and joy. She cherished any opportunity to talk about or visit with family, regardless of relation. Valerie is survived by her two children, Bonnie (Brent) Robinson of Doaktown, NB and Jeff (Judy) Porter of Doaktown, NB. Known to the entire community as “Nan Porter”, she was a safe haven and pillar of strength for her grandchildren, Heidi (Brandon) Dobbelsteyn of Fredericton, NB, Lacey (David) Clowater of Taymouth, NB and Misty (Lucas) Porter of McNamee, NB as well as the true shining stars, Nan’s great-grandchildren, Landon, Lydia, Jase, Noah, Beckett, Brady, Callen, Quinn and Ayla. Valerie was the oldest of twelve children and is also survived by Bev (Joseph) Price, Manley (Pat) Price, Perley Price, Alfred Price, Meta Price, Truman (Devota) Price and Vivian (Andy) Lavigne, brother-in-law, Myles (Angela) Porter, daughter-in-law, Mary-Lou Porter as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, James “Jimmy” Porter whom she loved and cherished for 65 years as well as her parents, Joseph and Edna Price; brothers, Byron Price, Wayne Price, Hartley Price and Hayward Price; and her eldest son, James (Jamie) Porter.

Growing up in a large family, Valerie always enjoyed having her children and grandchildren close by. Family gatherings were always held at her house, and she never allowed anyone else near the kitchen. She loved to bake and often showed her love and affection with a pie, homemade rolls or chocolate chip cookies.

Valerie never formally retired as cooking served as one of her greatest passions. Over the years, she worked as cook/baker for several local establishments, including: The Village Family Restaurant, The Koffee Kup, and the B&L Restaurant. When she no longer worked outside of the home, Valerie continued to cook/bake and feed her family and community members. When her grandchildren were in university, she prepared care packages containing home baked goods to send back with them each week and she often prepared lunch for the boys working out at the bottle shop. Though no formal pay was received, Valerie’s other job titles include neighbourhood childcare and second mother to younger family members. Children were always welcome and present at her home and Valerie cared for them like she did her own.

Arrangements have been entrusted to York Funeral Home’s Miramichi Valley Chapel. At Valerie’s request, there will be no visitation. A Funeral Service will take place at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Doaktown, NB on Friday, September 20, 2024 at 1pm with Father Neil Osiowy officiating. Pallbearers are Manley Price, Perley Price, Alfred Price, Truman Price, Andy Lavigne and David Betts. Burial will take place immediately following the funeral service at St. Andrew’s Anglican (Clay Hill) Cemetery.

As an avid supporter and member of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, the family has asked that donations be made to the church in support of the purchase of new front doors. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
