Valerie was a very beloved aunt to me and a role model in my early life. She was also my godmother. Living next door, as a child I spent a good deal of time at her house and after school when my mom was working. I was always well looked after and made to feel part of the family. I fondly recall the drawer in her kitchen with chocolate bars and chips. I have an abiding love for chocolate which I attribute at least partly to her as I was never ever denied a treat! I spent so much time at her house and she always felt like a safe haven. I always knew Valerie loved me (although she never really said it) from her many thoughtful gifts, the countless cards with money in them, and all the baking. She often made me peppermint patties which I loved when I was home from university and later when I came home each Christmas and summer. I always visited her and never missed seeing her when I was home. Her eyes would light up when I came in and we’d have a good long talk and I was always so happy to see her. She was always the same. She was a rock. She talked all about family when I was there. In recent years I shared a lot of family photos with her on my phone and would show her photos of Dad (Hartley) over the years that I had put onto my phone. She was always so happy to see them. We’d often talk about dad after he passed. Valerie loved dad. We’d have a good laugh or poignant moment as we talked about some some thing he did. Valerie helped keep dad alive for me after he was gone because she loved him absolutely. She also had a great sense of humor and keen wit. You’d mention someone and she’d deliver this funny line about them and you’d laugh and laugh. She didn’t suffer fools and no one could pull the wool over her eyes. She was so unique. So rare. I’m writing this from Scotland and I’ve missed the funeral today. There are tears pouring down my face as I write this. I miss her already, and feel much more grief than I expected I would even though we knew this day was coming. You don’t just miss someone because you love them, it’s also because of how they saw and loved you. She meant so much to both my parents as well. She was knit into the fabric of our lives and will be deeply mourned.
