Obituary of Betty Gertrude MacCallum

Betty G. (Symonds) MacCallum, age 93 years, slipped away in the wee hours of the morning on Saturday, January 20, 2024, with her two daughters by her side.  

Born on November 4, 1930, she spent her growing up years on Grand Manan Island, NB and maintained and prioritized many lifelong connections with childhood friends both on the island and beyond.

She married the love of her life, W. Douglas MacCallum, in 1954, and they had over 60 years together until his passing in 2015.  

Mum was deeply devoted to her family, never wanting to miss a family gathering or breakfast at Coffee Mill. She was passionate about her Christian faith and her church, Crosspoint Wesleyan, which she attended all her adult life.  

She lived her last few years at Windsor Court, where she loved and was loved by both residents and staff, who became friends. There she earned the nickname Big Mac for her fun loving, competitive participation in games and activities.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, W. Douglas MacCallum; parents, Gordon and Eva (Smith) Symonds; sister, Ruth (Symonds) Dennison; brothers, Fraser and Conard Symonds. 

Betty is survived by her daughters, Susan Thumwood (Martin) and Ruth Woodworth (Stephen); six grandchildren, Welby Thumwood (Samantha), Devon Thumwood (Madison), Emily Ingraham (Brandon), Melissa Nugent (Tyler), Rachel Woodworth (Bennett), Ellen Woodworth (Kurtis); and eight (and a half) great-grandchildren, Astrid, Liam, Noah, Lennon, Poppy, Elliot, Madelyn and Genevieve.  Also survived by brothers, Fred Symonds (Maridel) and John Symonds (Willo Ann); sister-in-law, Debby Wilson (Harry); and many, much-loved, extended family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton. Visitation will take place at Crosspoint Wesleyan Church on Friday, May 24, 2024 from 10 am - 12 pm with the Memorial Service to follow immediatley at 12 pm.. Interment will be in Olivet Cemetery.
