Obituary of Wendell Allison Stairs

It is with sadness that the family of Wendell Allison Stairs announces his passing from pulmonary fibrosis at the DECH on November 3, 2021. Wendell was much loved by his wife of 31 years, Bernita Stairs, his children; Tim (Heather) Stairs, Matt (Lisa) Stairs, Martha (Maro) Kennedy and stepdaughter Monica (Stephen) Nissen. He was a loved Grampie to Nicole, Alicia, Brodie, Chandler, Alyssa, Brendan, and Quinn and a special Bubba to Erik and Grace. More recently, he loved watching Nicole and Tyler’s daughter Harpergrow.

Wendell was born, November 19, 1940 and raised in Temperance Vale, NB with his parents Sterling and Verna. He was one of six children.  He loved each of them and was a wonderful brother to Neil (late Rosalee) Stairs, Stella (Vernon) Corey, Jean (late Neil) McVicar, and Carole (Ivan) Drost.  He is survived by his many nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Merlin (Harriet) Stairs.

As a young man, he worked many years for Savage’s Drugstore.  He later worked for the NB government in Central Stores until his retirement. He was a baseball coach in his younger days and spent lots of time at the field with Matt.  He enjoyed watching and hearing about his children’s and grandchildren’s many adventures and accomplishments.

Wendell was a sports lover and a life long fan of the Blue Jays and Maple Leafs.  He couldn’t pass up watching a western, all things John Wayne, or his sister Carole’s roast beef dinners! He enjoyed reading and puzzles and had spent lots of time enjoying fiddle picking and partridge hunting. He was the best whistler and always the quickest man with a pun. Wendell was a legendary crib player spending hours playing with his friend, Ernie, brother in law, Ivan and brother Neil. Wendell’s laugh was a joy to hear and it was a treat if you made him chuckle. Wendell loved to spend time with his “Teete” and for them to go for day trips and out for breakfasts.  He will be forever loved and missed. 
At Wendell’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral. A private burial will held at a later date. Care arrangements are with York Funeral Home. Donations may be made in Wendell’s name to the Canadian Lung Association or the Cancer Research Society for those who wish to remember him. The family thanks everyone for their kindness during this time. Thank you to the nurses of 3 East and Palliative Care as well as, Dr. Bock for the wonderful care given to Wendell during his illness.
