We just now learned of Basil's passing. We are so sorry and extend our deepest condolences to the family. We spent many years with Basil and Joan at the camp and running dogs in the various dog trials. We also have some nice memories of Basil and Joan meeting us for lunch when we would visit Fredericton. We would certainly have been at the Celebration of Life had we known about it. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Paul and Veronica

I will forever cherish the fond memories of exploring the house and swimming pool up in Douglas as a young boy, while Basil and my dad probably talked about dogs the whole time. Basil always treated me so kindly and warmly and was a great friend to my mom and dad. My sincere condolences to the family.

Dear Penny, Brent and families,
We are thinking of you in your time of sorrow. We remember so many wonderful things about Uncle Basil. For us, he was the epitome of Canadian kindness and he embodied the Canadian spirit through and through: warm, welcoming, humble, kind, and proud of his roots. He was always eager to show our U.S. city kids the beauty of the New Brunswick outdoors at his camp, the Farm, and his homes. He was never boastful. Always generous! He had such character! When he and Aunt Joan came to visit us in Syracuse, New York in their motorhome, he mentioned that he would never stop in Maine to fill his gas tank; instead, he would gladly pay the higher Canadian gas prices and taxes to support his homeland. A completely self-made man who put family first! He was a great role model. We love him and all of you and we will always remember him. Love, Gail and Pete Bulman

Hello from Watson Williams in Bathurst. I have many happy memories of times spent with Basil and other young guys when I was young. I am so sorry. I will be praying for you. I will not be able to visit due to other demands. I have a picture some place of the three of us with Basil on the road in front of 1296 after Grammy Williams gave us all a new hat. I will search for it and hopefully get it to one of you when I find it. He was a great fellow and will be greatly missed.

So very sorry to hear of Basil's passing. I met Joan and Basil in 2011 when Joan shared a hospital room with my Mom, before Mom entered palliative care. Had several great chats with both of them. He was a very compassionate, tender man with Joan and my Mom. Rest in peace sir. It was a pleasure to have met you.

To everyone, all the Hawkins and Pringles and Lockhards, Basil I will miss you. We were some of your "younger" friends - just 35 of my 70 years. A good man, a kind man, a dog man. What else is there to say? Look for John, Basil. He is up there doing trials with one or all of our six Brittanies. Give him a hug for me. Jane Sheridan

This kind & gentle man was an official member of the Hatfield family for as long as I can remember. We shall never forget him nor the fact that he left this world a better place.

Dear Hawkins Family. I have so many memories of Basil and Joan, our families camped together so often at Davidson Lake, Lake George, at Everett’s farm and so many other places, as well as the field trials.
Basil was my rock after dad passed and always had comforting words during my time of grief.
Basil and Nancy called often and visited mom whenever they could. I was so happy they found each other.
Dad always thought of him as a dear friend. A brother from another mother.
Mom and I read his book together in her better days, we laughed and cried. It’s a wonderful memory.
Condolences to you all.
Wish I could join you at the celebration of his life.
