I remember Eldridge from a different perspective. I grew up in Fredericton (FHS 1968) but moved to Moncton in 1972. I returned often to see family and friends and several times I attended functions where Mayor Wilkins brought "greetings" on behalf of the citizens, etc. He was always so charming and humorous, often better than the speaker that followed.
I recall he was the first mayor of the newly amalgamated City of Fredericton (with the north side) and it was no surprise that the popular mayor of Na'ciss became the mayor of the new larger city of Fredericton. And I was told he was a very good leader and perhaps an inspiration to todays smaller communities as they look upon amalgamation with less favor. It can work with the right leadership.
I had looked forward to meeting him and chatting at the Six Cities Association but he stepped down as mayor in 1986 at the same election where I was elected a Moncton City Councillor until 1998.
Eldridge will be well and long remembered.

It’s a sad day today as we lay to rest this dear man who brought so much joy to Mom and to our entire family. Ebby was a wonderful example of loving kindness. It it didn’t take long for our family to cherish him as a step father and step grandfather. We loved going on outings with Ebby and Mom. He always had a story to tell and kept us all chuckling. He was also an amazing historian with interesting information about the places we visited. He took an interest in our lives. We will miss you Ebby. You were a very special person. Xxxx

My sincere condolences to Ebby’s family as Fredericton looses yet another very respected citizen of our City. He served as Mayor with dedication and pride, and as Pam and Ken have noted below, he treated all City employees with great dignity and respect.
I even had the pleasure and fun of visiting Barb and Ebby with their family each Christmas eve as SANTA; what a fun time together!
NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN! R.I.P. Ebby; you earned it.

It was an honour to know such a wonderful guy. He was Mayor of Fredericton when I worked at City Hall. If anyone were to ask what I liked about him the most, it would have to be that He loved to sing Gospel Songs with all his being and I enjoyed listening just as much. My condolences to those who loved this man.
