With the outbreak of WWII, Velma trained and was employed at an airport in Moncton, NB, replacing the electrical wiring in airplanes.

In 1967 Velma got a position at the Victoria Public Hospital.  Her job was to order supplies for various departments. In 1976 she started work at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital helping with the move from the old VPH. She stayed on at the DECH, in the store keeping department, until retirement.

She loved nothing better than cooking for her family and friends.  She was one of the first Meals on Wheels volunteers in the city.  She often helped with church suppers and bake sales.  She kept busy for many years after retirement taking in boarders at her home which created lasting friendships with wonderful people from all corners of the world.
