I was surprised to learn of Ken's passing a few days ago. We were colleagues at UNB, Ken in Geology and I in Civil Engineering. Our collaboration helped to provide a good link between the two departments. Ken made significant contributions to the early development of the Groundwater Studies Group at UNB. He was a person who spent time with students and who mentored them in their research.
I was fortunate to have visited with Ken at his retirement office at his home a few months ago. He continued to show an enthusiastic interest in his specialized field of earthquakes. I will miss our wide ranging conversations.
My wife and I express our sympathy to Elizabeth and family at this time.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Ken’s passing. Ken was a great help to me when I arrived at UNB in 1999, and took over the office and some of the teaching duties he’d left upon retiring a few years before. We had a shared passion for geophysics, and he made me aware of many regional applications – most notably through his dogged determination to unearth historical patterns of earthquake activity in the province. He remained scientifically engaged and associated with UNB throughout his retirement and kindly assisted me and many of my students over the years by reviewing their theses. I have fond memories of field work and other collaborations with Ken including a trip to McAdam, NB in April, 2012 where we were to speak at a town hall about the nature of a remarkable “seismic swarm” affecting the village. Ken was mildly perturbed when my car broke down halfway there. Fortunately, we managed to arrive just a few minutes late - he in the comfy front seat, and I on the hard plastic back seat of an RCMP cruiser driven by an officer who just happened to be headed to McAdam as well. Also, fortunately, most people and the CBC New crew were already inside the hall when we arrived. I will miss Ken for his thoughtfulness and humour and for our shared interests. My thoughts are with his family and especially Elizabeth who was also always so welcoming whenever I would call or drop by.

Elizabeth, Helen, and David.
I just heard this morning that a great man is no longer among us as we journey through our earthly days. I remember Ken as a gracious and caring person who shared his knowledge of the workings of earthly surroundings with any who asked, as I did from time to time.
The memories of Ken as a husband and father are far greater than any us who were fortunate to know him. Cherish your memories and give thanks for his life.

My sympathies on your loss.
I believe I was Dr Burke's first grad student when I returned to UNB to undertake an MSc (Geology) in 1971.
He was always an excellent and understanding teacher.
The profession has lost an asset and the community a fine gentleman.
Dwight Ball BSc, MSc, PGeo (ret).

Shantha and I share the grief of passing of Dr. Ken Burke, who always carried a smile and who shared his experiences, in particular, of his studies on earthquakes. Ken and I(Venu) jointly conducted some geophysical// geological work about a decade ago in southern New Brunswick during my tenure as a geologist with NBDNRE. On many occasions, I used to meet Ken walking his daughter’s dog or his own on the trail from UNB campus to the walking bridge. Ken was a very cheerful and a happy person to be around with. We convey our heartfelt CONDOLENCES to Elizabeth and Family. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.
D.V. VENUGOPAL.

The Burke Family has been incredibly kind to me. I will remember Ken as a very gentle and quiet man. I see him in my mind's eye with a big smile. It was his way of communicating when words were not needed. He was wonderfully quirky and interesting; although, unassuming and humble. The world needs more Kens, not less. My sincerest condolences to his family.
With Love,
Ardith Finnamore

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Burke family. Ken was a truly nice guy who I enjoyed seeing whenever the rare occasion arose. I can still remember the first time I met him (in 1984) and the surprise I felt at learning (through him) that there were earthquakes in Atlantic Canada. His passing is a loss to any and all who knew him and it was a sad, sad way to end that most miserable of years. Rest in peace Ken.
