I was talking about great teachers I’ve had and Mr. Guptill’s name was in the top 3. I attended Stanley High School in ‘77? I’m old and moved a lot. He marched us out into the forest to talk about sustainable selective logging to ensure the long life of the Forrest and its ecosystems, bringing up David Sellicks Dad as an example. He made it personal and relatable. He tools us to Grand Manan Island where we all bunked out in his mom’s little house. One adult with all those hormonal 16 yr olds!!! He dragged us all on long hikes thru marshes, hills, cliffs and the sea side to observe birds and wildlife. He made us think. In class my recollection was that he knew that no everyone was cut out to understand or like chemistry and biology so he made it as relevant to our own lives as possible so that we could lock the info away for test day. He commanded respect by giving very basic respect without pandering to the ridiculousness that the young teen’s brain. He also had the gift of realizing when there were those students that just didn’t do well when called to answer a question (me! Performance anxiety ) but would go to them if they raised their hand. Looking back you realize what a gift he was to all of us who were lucky enough to have been in his class.

To Faye and family, many years have past but Wayne and You have come to memory of the days I was a member of the Stanley Elementary and Stanley High School. Wayne was the first Vice Principal I work with. He also made curling an interested that is still deep in my heart. Our trip to Grand Manan to curl and staying at Wayne's home was a great memory even though Bob Harvey got so sick he could not curl on our voyage to Grand Manan. Wayne was a great friend and a great colleague as you Faye were also. I grew as a teacher with such good example s as You( Faye) and Wayne. I also remember the card games I shared with your son Darrell, Faye there are so many great memories. God bless you and keep you safe. Love and reassurance from God will bring us through as God is always faithful.

We had many good teachers at Stanley High School, but Wayne Guptill holds an honoured place in my memories. His influence was a big part of why I chose to pursue a career in science, not least because he taught biology in ways that resonated with a rural, working-class teenager, while also giving advice about higher education that prepared me well for life as an undergraduate at UNB.
If you go into the Science Library at Queen’s University and take my PhD dissertation down from the shelf, you will find that the Dedication page includes these words: “To Wayne E. Guptill, who taught me and many other high school students the beauty and fascination of science...”
For me, he was the right teacher in the right place at the right time. He was a mentor. He was a friend. I owe him a lot and I shall not forget him. Rest In peace, Mr Guptill. My sincere condolences to the family.

He was an amazing man, mentor and teacher. He never gave up on me, no matter how many times I almost gave up on myself. He touched so many lives, and will never be forgotten. He is now teaching everyone in heaven about the birds and taking them bird watching.

So very sorry to hear about Mr. Guptill’s passing. He was such an passionate person, he believed 100% in all he shared and taught. Mr. Guptill was one of two teachers that took our grade 11 class on a weekend canoe trip. It was a trip I’ll never forget, and God Bless him for taking on that challenge! He had such faith in us, never worrying about the trouble a group of 17 year old students could get into. Thank you Sir, for believing in us.
Mr. Guptill will always be remembered for all he gave to his students, his great influence, and his love of Grand Manan. RIP. ❤️❤️

So sorry to hear of Wayne's passing. I remember Wayne as an excellent and passionate teacher during my school days in Stanley in the 70's. The class trips he organized, so we students could be outside and learn more about nature and our environment were second to none, and certainly helped shape our young minds and hearts to become more fully aware of environmental issues, and to make positive actions for nature and our environment as a way of life.
My deepest condolences to Wayne's family, as you grieve his loss, yet still remember and celebrate all the wonderful times you shared together. May the knowledge of how much positive difference he made in the lives of so many, as a great teacher, bring you much peace, comfort, and healing at this time.

To Family of Wayne Guptill
I've known Wayne as a neighbour and conversationalist. My favourite time with him was hearing of the large fishing vessel that he and his father acquired on the west coast, and brought back to Grand Manan via the Panama Canal. Also, Wayne played baseball at Devon Park Ball Field in 1954 when he was at Teachers' College. I remember going to those games as a 14 year old boy. We will certainly miss him at McKnight Street.
