George and Eric,
I was sorry to read about your dad. No matter what the age, it's a difficult page to turn. I never knew your dad but I always wished I could have. From what I saw and heard, I knew he had to be a special man. I just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family circle. May you rest in God's peace and the friendship and love of so many people. So many stories and very special memories. My heart goes out to you.

Hello Peter,
Although I never knew your father, it's clear that he loved God and family (not to mention Canada!). Bereavement is always a difficult time, but much more so in the midst of this pandemic. I pray that you, Grace and the rest of the family will nonetheless experience God's comfort and grace in the days and weeks ahead.
In Christ,
Steve Males

Today was the funeral of my Uncle George and I just wanted to say how important he had been to my Dad (Flop) and to our family.
Uncle George convinced my Dad to move to Canada in 1977, saying the land was lush and perfect for farming. When we first arrived, our family of six Van Woudenbergs stayed with the nine Versloots all crowded in together for 6 weeks. George had no hesitation in helping us out. Together Flop and George found a decent farm to buy, got cows and quota, and set us on our way for a new life.
George was not only Flop's brother-in-law, he was also his advisor, colleague, friend and, even sometimes, a competitor - especially when the inspector came around! George and Flop went on many road trips to buy cows, attended shows, and endlessly talked pedigrees and farming. There were many lunches, coffees and doughnuts on these trips, with the two of them always flipping a coin to see who would pay.
With big talk and big dreams, the two of them even became Real Estate partners. They helped many other people's dreams of owning a farm in Canada come true, helping to host Dutch families when they arrived and then finding farms for them in NB. Unfortunately, they were caught selling farms without a real estate license, but escaped being cell mates! They could have gone on to school together to get their licences, but both felt that was too much effort. And in any case, by then they had made their little pot of gold together.
I felt this experience merited an honorable mention on this day when we remember and celebrated the life of Uncle George and all those whose lives he touched.

I have wonderful and enduring memories of the time spent at the farm with Uncle George, Aunt Gerda and my cousins after we emigrated from Holland to Canada. They warmly welcomed us into their home and we spent weeks there as my parents searched for their own farm. In the years that followed, we passed many Sundays afternoons after Church and Christmas holidays with the Versloot family. My Uncle George taught me how to sing from a Church hymnal, patiently pointing out the unfamiliar English words as we sang, giving me a big wink when I got the pronunciations right. He was never shy to give advice and to share his views....and there were many views on a variety of subjects, including on which boys I was seeing. His views always came with a sparkle in his eyes. It was that sparkle, that zest for life, which will remain with me. Rest in peace Uncle George. My condolences and hugs to everyone in the family. xx Anneke

Steve and I are sorry to hear about the passing of George. His passion for the church and his interest in people was something that we will always remember. Both George and Gerda were so kind to us when we first arrived in New Brunswick 35 years ago and we will never forget their generosity. God bless all of you during this difficult time. We will be thinking about you.

To the entire Versloot family. My hearfelt condolances to the family for your loss. He will be missed by many friends, family and the community. Reading through all the wonderful memories people have shared.. truely shows how George and Gerda both were very gracious, giving and welcoming. There was always room for one more at the table whether we had already eaten or not. George insisted we join them at the table. I also have memories of the farm when I was a little girl visiting with my family to my teen years going on Sundays with the youth group. So sorry for your loss.

To the entire Versloot family, you have our deepest sympathies for the loss of your father. I, like so many others have great memories of going to the farm after church on Sundays for coffee and lunch. I remember many times as a boy going over to the islands for haying and enjoying the tractor rides and the ferry rides as well. Now as many years have passed and we have all grown up and had families of our own we can all be grateful for the great role models we had. Your father showed us all how to work hard and enjoy your life and the people around us and your mother was one of the sweetest people you could ever meet in your lifetime, always singing in the kitchen as she baked and cooked the best tasting cookies, breads, soups and everything else she made. May Gods peace be with you during these difficult times but take comfort in knowing how many peoples lives your father has touched. From Wilt and Lori Kroon and family

Yvonne, Margaret and families,
Brian and I extend our sympathy to each of you. We recalled a time when your mom and dad were at our greenhouse. Brian was speaking with your mom for a bit before she went for the right colored red geraniums which she loved! Your dad, with a grin on his face, turned to Brian and said "you know how to charm the older ladies"! We got a big chuckle out that.
Thinking of you.

I spent 5 wonderful summers working on the farm in the late 60’s. I was made to feel so very welcome by my “Lieve Oom” Jos (that was my nick name for him - beloved uncle George) and Tanta Gerda, living as part of their family. I feel like I grew up on the farm - age 13 to 17 - and learned an awful lot about life, work, motivation, self-reliance, and yes, even teen-aged love. George had advice for every aspect of that. George was a great bear of a man, larger than life in so many ways. And he wasn’t afraid to take risks, from moving to Canada from Holland, from Ontario to New Brunswick to buy a farm, building what we then called the “new barn” and even dabbling in $500! straws (what would that be worth today?) of semen to upgrade his herd. He invested in his family, his farm and in himself. I learned from all that too. I envy you all for your many years spent in the arc of his life, and am deeply sorry for your great loss.

Wanted to add, the story Gerta told us, when George was in Canada and she was in Holland. He asked her to make some curtains for his the house he had here. He gave her the measurements in inches and she was used to metric and make the curtains in cm. She had tears of laughter in her eyes when she mimicked George hanging the "little" curtain in the window.

He was a generous man and I loved having the occasional Sunday lunch at the farm with the whole family. I will be thinking of all of you in the coming days. George was a great man, we had many wonderful visits. One of my favourites was an argument when her brought a tool from his tool chest for me to cut his nails. He was not happy when I said no but he did allow me to continue. He would stop in occasionally and say “I don’t need my toes done but needed to see you”. I will miss him dearly. Condolences to all.

We are sorry to hear of this great loss to your family. Our sympathy to you all. Other than bringing our daughters, Kayleigh & Alyssa over to 4H at the Versloot barn, my best memory of George was when he was the auctioneer for a 4H auction. Being fairly new to the community my name was not known to him, so he yelled our "Sold to the minister lady". Love and prayers,
