Obituary of Velma Stairs

The passing of Velma Geraldine (Jones) Stairs of Fredericton, NB, wife of the late George Stairs occurred on Friday, December 21, 2012 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB. Born on July 20, 1928 in Prince William, NB, she was the daughter of the late William and Alice (Hood) Jones. She was a member of the Gentle Shepherd Community Church. Velma was an avid card and scrabble player; she especially took pride in her children and grandchildren and in their accomplishments. Velma is survived by her daughters, Janis Violette (Gil), Beth Armstrong (Garry) and Faith Stairs all of Fredericton, NB sons, George Stairs of Fredericton, NB and Brad Stairs (Madonna) of Fort Erie, ON; grandchildren, Joel Violette, Jeanna Violette and Patrick Stairs; sister, Florence Bartlett of Fredericton, NB; brother, Ernest Jones (Marjorie) of Fredericton, NB; sister-in-law, Beulah Jones of Cheshire, Conn.; several nieces and nephews. Besides Velma’s parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Bertha Jones and Violet Brewer; brother, Hazen Jones and brothers-in-law, Ken Bartlett and Murray Brewer. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Saturday, December 22, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Memorial Service will be held at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Sunday, December 23, 2012 at 2 pm with Rev. Scott Kohler and Rev. Dr. Brad Little officiating. Interment will take place in Barony Cemetery, Dumfries, NB at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
