Obituary of Edna Thompson
The passing of Edna Lauretta (Murphy) Thompson, wife of the late Dr. Percy G. Thompson occurred on Friday, August 3, 2012 at the Veteran’s health Unit in Fredericton, NB. Born in Bras d’Or, NS, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Edna (Grantmyre) Murphy. She graduated from the school of nursing at the New Waterford General Hospital in 1942, later becoming a Lieutenant Nursing Sister in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps from 1943–1945 during the second world war. Edna also had a second career with the New Brunswick Department of Health and Community Services until she retired.
She was a member of St. Dunstan’s Church, Catholic Women’s’ League, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #4, Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #4 and the Christian Ladies. As a long term resident of the Veteran’s Health Unit, the staff and residents were truly an extension of Edna’s family. The care she received was greatly appreciated.
Edna is survived by one son, Brian Thompson (Diane); two grandchildren, Michael and Lindsey Thompson; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Luke.
Besides her husband and parents, Edna was predeceased by five brothers, James, Jack, Melvin, Wayson and Hugh.
There will be no visitation by request. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated from St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at 12 pm with Father John Jennings as celebrant. Interment will be in Hermitage Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
