Obituary of Joseph Goguen
Goguen, Joseph Benedict "Ben"- 1931 - 2012
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of an extraordinary man. "Ben" passed into the arms of waiting loved ones with family by his side July 23, 2012 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton, NB in his 81st year. Born in 1931 to the late Clifford and Mary (Robichaud) Goguen, Ben was a proud French Acadian and native of Chatham Head, NB.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Lynn (Palmer; his four children, daughters, Mary Ellen (Chris) Thatcher of Bayfield, ON, Anne (Paula Arsenault) Goguen of Tatamagouche, NS, Lucy Goguen of Moncton, NB, and son Chris Goguen of Bartibog Bridge, Miramichi, NB; as well as grandchildren Patrick, Kendra, Derrick, Stacey, William and great grandchildren Donovan and Jessica; also survived by sisters, Mildred, Amelia, Marilyn, and brother, Levi all from Miramichi, NB; as well as many extended family members. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his late wife, Regina "Jean" (Keoughan) as well as six brothers and one sister.
Being a barber allowed Ben to hone his skill as a story teller. Whether volunteering for a cause close to his heart (Diabetes Assoc., CNIB, Old-timers Baseball) or supporting his other interests (Liberal Assoc., Knights of Columbus) he put his all into it. Wanting to help young people stay out of trouble fueled his desire to start the Douglastown Little League in the early '70's. His love for baseball came from the early years in the 50's when he pitched for the Chatham Head Tigers during which time "Buffalo Ben" was scouted out for the Cardinals (his love for the Miramichi kept him home).
He loved golfing as well as fishing and canoeing and shared this with his children and grandchildren as often as possible. Discovering a digital camera helped with the many photos and videos he loved to take on a daily basis. When he wasn't adding historical memories to his scrapbooks he was out gardening or canning (or making his extraordinary meat pies). He was loved by so many. His smiles and humor are remembered by everyone that knew Ben.
With his wishes, there will be no visitation. A public graveside service will take place Thursday afternoon July 26, 2012 at 2 pm at Saint Samuels Roman Catholic Church, Douglastown, Miramichi with a reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice. Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to York Funeral Home, Fredericton, NB.
