Obituary of John MacGillivray
The passing of John Scott MacGillivray of Stanley, NB, husband of Elizabeth “Betty” (Moss) MacGillivray, occurred on Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. John was born on March 8, 1932 in Chamcook, NB, the youngest of eight children, he was the son of the late Angus and Nellie (McNichol) MacGillivray. John graduated from High School in Blacks Harbour, received his Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, Masters of Education and Certificate of Reality Therapy from the University of New Brunswick. John began his teaching career in Stanley, where he met his Elizabeth, wife of almost 52 years. He also taught in Taymouth school and in Goose Bay, Labrador. Most of his teaching career was in Boiestown at the Upper Miramichi Regional High School where he was an Administrator. John was active in sports as a young man and also coached several basketball and hockey teams later on into adulthood. John was a well respected member of the Masonic Order, he was past master of Landmark Lodge, Boiestown, All bodies of Scottish Rite, including having been Past Most Wise Sovereign of King Solomon Chapter-Rose Croix, Past Commander-in-Chief of NB Sovereign Consistory, Honorary Inspector-General 33 degree, Past Provincial Grand Master of Order of Scotland, Member of Luxor Shrine, Fredericton Shrine Club and Fredericton Fire Brigade Shrine Unit. John held the position of Mayor of Stanley, was President of the Capital Region Development Commission, was a school board member and also facilitated the development of the Stanley Players Theatre. He was an active member of St. Thomas Anglican Church in Stanley where he was a lay reader. In addition to his wife, Elizabeth “Betty”, John is survived by his daughter, Kimberly (Martin) Greechan; sons, Kenneth (Carolyn McConnel), Kris (Rebekka), Scott (Angie Amos); seven grandchildren whom he idolized, Alex and Fraser MacGillivray, Rachel, Daniel and Elizabeth Greechan, Nickolas MacGillivray and Cheyanne MacGillivray; sisters, Dorothy of Ontario and Jean of Nova Scotia; brother, Everett of Ontario; several nieces and nephews and special niece, June (Bud) Armstrong. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Ruth and brothers, Sid, Donnie and Chet. Honourary Pallbearers for the service will be Bill Smith, Jacques Leveque, Stephen Everett, Jim Carr, Colin Rayworth and Bill Moss.
