Obituary of Edna Drew

The death of Edna Myrtle Drew of Fredericton, NB, wife of the late Rev. Karl Drew, occurred on Friday, March 11, 2011 at the Oromocto Public Hospital. Born on June 3, 1916 in Economy, NS, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Isabel (Marsh) Higgs. She was a member of the Gibson Memorial United Church and a life time member of the UCW. Edna was a very caring, unselfish, open hearted woman whose greatest joy was her family. She served for forty-one years beside her husband, in the United Church of Canada congregations throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick; leading youth groups (Mission Band, CGIT … Sunday School) and women’s groups (Ladies Aid, UCW). She also served as a summer camp counselor. Edna personally renovated each lived-in manse … wall papering, painting, varnishing and cleaning, and sometimes hosted church events in said manse. Throughout her lifetime she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting and sewing both for family and others. Most recently the daily crossword puzzle, cryptogram, reading and canasta games were her pastimes. Edna’s daughters are eternally grateful for the sacrifices she made to ensure that they received the college educations circumstances denied her. Edna is survived by her daughters, Margaret Drew of Fredericton, NB and Helen Woods (Dr. Donald) of Houlton, ME; grandchildren, Dr. Karl Woods (Lisa) of Houlton, ME, Randy Woods of Winterport, ME, Amy Metherell (Walter) of Houlton, ME and May Knights (Joe) of Florida; several great grandchildren; sisters, Bertha Brown of Florida and Myrna Shirley of Truro, NS; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Edith Heustis and Evelyn Estey; brothers, Vernon and Leonard. Visitation will take place at Gibson Memorial United Church on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 1 pm; followed by a Memorial Service at 2 pm with Rev. Boyd Vincent officiating. Interment will take place in the Elmwood Cemetery, Moncton, NB at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Gibson Church Memorial Fund.
