Obituary of Jean Mollon

Friends and family across Canada are grieving the loss of Jean Mollon who died in her 98th year. She leaves behind family all the way from Newfoundland to British Columbia. Jean died of a heart attack in the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Thursday, July 11, 2019. Her granddaughter, Janell and daughters, Helen and Doris were with her. A feisty gal, Jean enjoyed cooking, housekeeping, tending to her garden and visiting with friends and family to the end. A Newfoundlander, she was born in Pouch Cove (near Torbay) in 1921 to James Butler and Ellen Connor. She was the oldest of four surviving children (now deceased) her mother dying shortly after a fifth child was born. She grew up in a small fishing community in an era of horses and wood stoves, quilting and rug making, no garbage then. Jean married Sid Mollon and moved to Canada; Sydney, Nova Scotia. They moved to Fredericton after Sid retired from the Armed Forces at Base Gagetown. Sid and Jean loved to attend the weekly dances at the Legion where they danced the night away, both of them being talented dancers. Jean loved her home and friends in Fredericton. Her home was a ‘drop-in centre’ for neighbours, friends and family. A puzzle might be on the go and a way to pass time. The only television was the game shows in the evening. Her Catholic faith was extremely important to her and until recently she attended services every Saturday evening. Prayers were said daily. A special thanks to Eva MacSween. House proud, she was an excellent housekeeper. When the family moved out of the house in Oromocto after 13 years, on inspection she was told it looked like no one had ever lived there! Her garden was her pride and joy. Peonies, roses and hollyhocks bloomed among other flowers that made her garden greatly admired. Predeceased by her husband Sid, Jean leaves behind three daughters, Helen (Will) Basque of Harvey, Doris (Sid) Rutter in Oromocto and Barbara Mollon in Vancouver. A proud grandmother to Andrew Basque, Janell Nason, Colin Rutter, Stacey Stevens and David Pelletier; a sixth grandchild Aaron Rutter being predeceased. Jean lived long enough to have great grandchildren, Jacob Basque, Mitchell, Ali and Cheyanne Nason, Sebastian, and little Oliver Rutter just one year old. A great great granddaughter, Ali’s daughter Dakota made for five surviving generations! Jean will be greatly missed by her close friends who rallied round her following the death of her husband. They meant the world to her, and she to them. A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at the York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Monday, July 22, 2019 from 1-4 pm.
