Obituary of Lawrence Durling
Lawrence Henry Durling passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in Fredericton, New Brunswick on Thursday, November 8, 2018. Lawrence was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick on September 19, 1947 to Sheldon and Helen (Henry) Durling. He grew up in Meductic until the family moved to Fredericton where he later obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of New Brunswick and subsequently earned a Chartered Accountant (CA) designation.
Lawrence had a distinguished career in post-secondary education spanning five decades including serving as Vice-President (Finance) at Atlantic Education International, Vice-President (Finance) at St. Thomas University and Chairman of the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission. He was also active in the community serving on various Boards of Directors and with Gibson Memorial United Church.
Lawrence was a devoted father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed many sports and being active. He will be remembered for his kind smile and confident and silent demeanour, and for his dedication to his work, family and friends.
Lawrence is survived by his daughters Catherine (Mike Mercier) and Emily and his grandsons Onyx and Max, his brother Clifton (Marilyn) Durling and their daughters Jennifer (James) Best and Joanne (Cary) Dudley. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Durling (Depow) and his parents.
Visitation will take place in York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Sunday, November 11, 2018 from 4-7 pm. A Celebration of Life will take place at Gibson Memorial United Church on Monday, November 12, 2018 at 2 pm with Rev. Kelly Higgins officiating. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Lawrence Durling Athletic Award at St. Thomas University, the Gibson Memorial United Church, Hospice House Fredericton, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
