I can't believe I'm reading this obituary. I had no idea John had passed. This is so sad and upsetting. I was looking him up with the intent to surprise visit while I was going to be up in Fredericton this coming Monday. I'm choked up but also so angry with myself for not keeping in touch. I just need to say: John, I'm so very sorry man you've always been in the back of my mind and I was sure we would pick back up someday and laugh about the past, there were so many hilarious memories. I guess we'll do it later somewhere else my friend.
John and I met while working at McLean's Sports in the early 80's , He was hired as a motorcycle mechanic and I was in parts/sales. For those who didn't really know him I'd like to share a few (of many) fond memories: John was a "character" , he possessed a quick wit and a very sarcastic (and sometimes dark) but exceeding funny sense of humor and that's probably why we hit it off right away. He was sometimes a challenge to keep up with (intellectually) but you always knew where you stood with him-he was frank and didn't mince words particularly about what he thought of others. And he was usually spot on about that. He also had a temper-I remember, on occasion, he would loose it while working on a bike that wasn't cooperating and he'd talk down to it (to put it really mildly) as if it were 'listening' and threaten to end it's life unless it let him fix it. As a testament to his mechanical abilities, I don't think there was ever a bike that came through the door that he couldn't "intimidate", figure out and fix. He was an excellent (self-taught iirc) and very capable mechanic. John was a rider as well, both on and off road and there were many great memories in those arenas-particularly off-road. We were riding in Minto (in the "mud dumps") one Saturday flat out down a mining road when we got caught off guard by a steel cable running across the road. He was in front on his IT250 Yamaha, got hard on the brakes and caught the cable between the front fender/wheel on the forks and it had just enough slack in it to lift/swing him and his bike straight up into the air so the rear wheel was a good 5-6 feet off the ground. The cable then snapped back downward slamming both to the ground -I was able to low-side my bike (Suzuki PE400) and while sliding by him watched as a mushroom cloud of dust exploded as they both hit the ground. This was at least a 50mph to zero in a split second crash and I was sure he (and the bike) were screwed. When the dust settled John was on his feet, his bike still wrapped up in the cable, he had a big grin on his face and said something like : "Yup, that's why I love dirt biking, some A-hole always has a surprise waiting for you around the next corner" . On another occasion a group of us were riding hill climbs out in Zealand (in the rain) and were chasing each other to the top of the hills when one of us (McLean's Sports owner, Brian ) went down in front of John at the top of a long steep hill and John unavoidably landed on him and his bike. Brain was pissed and I remember John saying to him " well thanks for being there I needed you for the traction" . Good memories, lol. Outside "work" , John was a passionate, devoted and very skilled guitarist-the kind where you could be hanging out with and say "play the so and so riff from Satriani's surfing with the alien" (or almost anything you asked) and he'd pretty much nail it in short order. I remember going to some of their jam sessions,(he had a band for awhile) and gigs-- always a great time with all of the proper "accoutrements" if you know what I mean. On occasion, I listened to some of his own compositions and they were damned good. John was "all in" when it came to what he liked/loved and that definitely included his family and friends (of which he had many). I'm sure they all miss him deeply. Just felt the need to share a couple of many fond memories here.
John, I hope somewhere, sometime we can get together again and pick up where we left off , I'm looking forward to hanging out and continuing those good times-until then my friend I'll listen out for the sound of that Gibson Les Paul Cherry Sunburst that you played so well. Peace man.

I just read of Johns' passing in a radio magazine. My sincere condolences to his friends and family. Sorry that I am late to post.
I never met John face to face. No, I only argued with him over radio.
Apparently, this young fellow worked in Ontario a couple of years, or more, before I went there to work.
Well ... no sooner would I check in with a local radio group, and the questions would start. Typically, the radio guys would say "Welcome to our Group Dan", "Where are you from Dan?", "How long will you be working here ?" etc etc.
But, thanks to John, all I got was.... "Hey Dan, do you know John?", "Hey Dan, what is John doing?", "Hey Dan ... John, John, John". Sheesh.
I finally returned to NB and low and behold ran into John on-the-air. Did I ever blast him. I never quit. Blast after blast.
Young fellow simply chuckled, and probably smirked while he was doing it. He explained that he had help set up a digital net or something for the Ontario Boys and they were quite appreciative of his efforts. Of course I responded "You're making me sick. I had to tolerate 'John' and 'OX' all this time over that?"
He is certainly missed down here in Chance Harbour, NB and around the world (especially in Ontario, for God's sake). I feel so bad that he passed away at such a young age. I will no longer get a chance to tease him.
Best regards (73) John and for once, please try to behave.

John and I had similar interests... guitars and radios......and flyfishing. I grew up in Chatham. We were about a year apart in age and both got licensed at about the same time. Both still In high school. Over the years jobs, family, location, education saw us move around a bit and in and out of the hobby. Recently back from Calgary and settled into Bathurst, its been terrific to talk a lot again.... chasing Dx together with our similar callsigns, VE9OX and VE9XX. Causing confusion, and sometimes laughter as we would try it outgun each other for a station in a distant land. Checking in to his beloved CW net. I am really going to miss you. 73 John. ... -.-

John was not only my client but he was a great friend. I've been his hairstylist for a while now and he was the kindest man to me. We had a lot of laughs and he was always there for his Mom and Dad taking care of them, lunch every day at his Mom's. Such a loss for Pat and his wife.

Dear Lisa, Patty, and family. John was my boss when I joined Fundy Telecom in the new Halifax office in 1996. He was a very good boss, he knew how to manage, get the work done, and gain the respect of his staff. We shared a common interest in HAM Radio, Telecommunications, and quiet rivers with a good stock of fish. I remember the day when he told me Ewan hired him at Fundy and how happy he was to return to New Brunswick and exit Toronto. I am glad to have met him, considered him a friend, and very glad we stayed in touch over the years. Warmest condolences from Glen and Anne-Marie Hammonds Plains Nova Scotia.

But life as it does made us go our separate ways, but I always considered John a good friend, as well as his Mom and Dad and Sister Patricia. Love to you all. From Bob
