Kind belated condolences to the Hermelin family who may read this short note. After completing Forestry School in Fredericton in 1975 I went to the FES office where I had a very impromptu interview by Joakim. One the comments he made to me was, "you remind me of a minister". He must have liked my demeanor. I worked for Joakim for seven years from 1976 to 1983. Joakim was perhaps the kindest 'boss', supervisor, educator or mentor to all his staff. Even after I left the Extension services to teach Silviculture at the NB College I maintained my friendly forestry relationship with him. I would often see Joakim at various Atlantic forestry functions and forums over the years. It was always such a pleasure to get reacquainted. With a ready smile Joakim could coax a return smile from anyone. After he had departed FES we again met at which time I recall he was in business for hardwood components. Joakim was always an easy person with whom to share information. Joakim was an open book. Joakim's family will be happy to know that their father, uncle, brother or husband was loved by many, including me.

My belated condolences to the Hermelin family. I just found Joakims obituary only this morning. He was a fantastic boss during 81-82 as a Summer student and then 90-95 at FES creating education materials for woodlot owners. My father Tom Bjerkelund (d. 2007), a forest engineer at UNB, also knew Joakim and they enjoyed their love of forestry and Scandinavian backgrounds together. Dad always spoke of him with great admiration. I would meet Joakim many times after FES and we always had a good catchup. Whenever Joakim comes to mind I immediately remember of his positive nature, delighted grin and finding the collaborative solution to what was at hand. All the best to you.

Was I a good boss? This was a question that Joakim asked one of the Forest Extension Staff while he was recovering in hospital to which I'm sure Margaret Carr answered in the affirmative. Anyone who knew Joakim knew that whatever job he undertook, he did to the best of his ability. I first had the opportunity to meet Joakim when Rev. Hart arranged for him to visit N.B. I believe I was the first to introduce him to some of my clients in Charlotte County. It was a pleasure to acquaint him with our people. He surprised me by presenting each of these people with a hand made wooden butter knife. He was always full of these little surprises. Around this time Joakim was asked to attend a directors' meeting of the Southern N.B. Woodlot Owners' Association in Sussex. For some time, the woodlot owners had been struggling to find a legal framework to conduct business. That night, they were at a pivotal point and needed a push. Joakim made it plain that if they were to progress, they needed to get into business and the simplest way was to form a co-operative. The 19 people at that meeting decided to form the S.N.B Wood Producers Co-operative which became a motivating force for all N.B. Wood Producers. Later, Joakim became the new director of Forest Extension Service and then proceeded to oversee the further development of the F.E.S which provided all forms of educational material, courses, field days, and demonstrations to woodlot owners. Joakim was always enthusiastic about all aspects of woodlot and woodlot owner development, from butter knives to brush saws and sometimes on a much higher plane than some of us could have imagined. Yes, Joakim, you were a good boss.
