Obituary of David Sherwood
Life Legacy
It is with extreme sadness that the family of David James Sherwood announces his sudden passing on Friday, 18th May 2018 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton. Dave suffered a massive heart attack and we are thankful that he held on long enough for his wife and stepsons to be by his side. The family would like to thank Dave’s friend Ken, the paramedics, and hospital staff for their care for Dave in his final moments. Born July 1st, 1941 in Dorchester, NB; he was son of the late Wellington Sherwood and Carmel (Hicks).
Dave lived a dedicated life of hard work, integrity and service to his community. After just over 25 years in the RCMP, Dave retired as Staff Sargent in 1986 and went to work for the Saint John Police Force, serving as Chief of Police from 1989 to his retirement in 1997. He was an active member of numerous professional organizations, holding prestigious posts such as President of the RCMP Veterans Association, President of the NB Association of the Chiefs of Police, Director of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, and President of Fredericton City Club. Dave was the founding member of the Fredericton ATV Club and a member of so many committees and boards, far too many to list here.
Though Dave led an ambitious professional career, it is in his personal life and relationships that he will be most sorely missed. Dave, or ‘Chief’ as his friends and family affectionately called him, was always quick to help a friend or neighbour in need. Dave enjoyed keeping a meticulous yard, traveling with Gail (they were planning a cross-Canada trip in their motorhome this summer), leading tours of Newfoundland on his ATV, sharing a story with the boys at the City Club and, most of all, speaking proudly of his sons and stepsons to anyone who would listen. He will be remembered for his smile, giggle, wit and sarcastic humour.
Dave is survived by his wife, Gail (Melvin) Sherwood, Sons Jason (Jenn) and Tyler (Angela); Stepsons Rick (Christine) Trecartin and Sean Trecartin. Grandchildren; Emilee, Kaiden, Lanaya, Myles and Maia, step-grandchildren Ashley, Dawson and Charley. Surviving siblings; Carole (Hary) and George (Joyce) and several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Dave’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. The family will hold a private service and Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA or to Autism Connections Fredericton and would be appreciated by the family.
Above all, Dave loved to hold a conversation and share a drink with friends, new and old. To those who knew him, we ask that you raise a toast to the life of David James Sherwood: loving husband and father, proud servant to the community, and never finished anything unless it was a job well done. You can rest now, Dad. You’ve raised us well – a job well done. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton.
