I controlled with Nels in 1970 at Fredericton Tower. Great guy. Friendly and helpful to a new controller like me. Learned a lot from him.He was well liked by all the other Controllers.I would attach 2 photos from 1970 of Nels in the Tower if I knew how to do it.

To the Pert Family and Relatives:
I started flying with my father, Charlie when I was about 12 - early '60s - Nelson was in the YFC tower then and my Dad and him had a "thing" they used to do re callsigns - Nelson never used the aircraft identifier when he heard Dad's voice - he would call Dad "Friendship 7" - they were great friends and I met Nelson many times in the tower - he was there with my father when I first soloed in February 1969. Nelson was a great controller and helped so many pilots who managed to get themselves in a bit of bother - he was such a lovely man and I have never forgot him through all my years of flying - rest easy old friend of our family - on behalf of Captain Chris and Rob Fisher

My brother Nelson had cherished memories of growing up on the farm in McKenzie Corner, NB. Each time I spoke with him on the phone during the past year he would say "didn't we have a wonderful life, didn't we have fun?"
Yes Nelson, we did have a wonderful life. So much freedom to explore the country-side. Nelson and his twin brother Norman - they were great shots with their sling-shots. I won't say what they did with their sling-shots, but they sure could hit a bird on the barn roof. I remember skiing and sledding to school in the winter. There was always music and singing in our home. Our first gramophone was so tall, the little twins had to stand on a stool to start it up. They sang along with all the songs.
Nelson was a happy man. He loved his darling wife Lilly and all of his children. They will have some great Nelson stories to tell their own grandchildren.
Yes, we did have a wonderful life Nelson and you will have an even better time where you are now. You are with Lillian and your wonderful family will all be together again someday.
God Bless you.
Your loving sister Jessie,
Calgary

I was a Rotary student at UNB in 1992. Before flying to Fredericton, I was visiting my friend from Japan in Calgary where I met Nelsons daughter Elizabeth at a block party. Elizabeth told me that I should call her family in Fredericton once I got there, which I did. This is how I met Nelson and his family, and I am forever grateful for the serendipity that brought me to this family. They took me under their wings and made sure that I was doing okay. I lived in a UNB residence, but I was going home on Douglas Avenue on weekends where I got fed with home cooked meals. You have no idea how grateful my parents back home were knowing that their child was so well looked after. They asked me, but how come they are so nice? I would tell them, I guess thats how it is in Canada. Over the years I learned that not everybody is like the Perts, but they are the reason why I think this country has the nicest people in the world, inclusive and compassionate, and why I came back to live here. My Canadian Dad will be missed immensely. My family in Japan send hugs to Nelsons family.

I was so very sorry to read of your fathers passing. I remember the fun we had in Belleisle at the trailer. Nelson would ask if we would like to partake of the sacrament and we would go over and listen to him and Al play the guitar and sing. We spent many enjoyable evenings with them. He was a wonderful man.

George Downey's daughter... I was very sad to learn of Uncle Nelson's passing.Living in the UK I feel cheated that I wasn't able to know my Canadian family better. What an amazing man he was- I specially loved that the local neighbourhood children woul call to see if he wanted to play... We could all do with following his lead and connecting with community! Love and prayers for you all, that you would soon replace your sadness with only those memories that light up a smile!
