Obituary of Herbert Shephard

The passing of Herb Shephard of Fredericton, NB, devoted husband of Wilma Anne (Sobey) occurred on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Fredericton Hospice. Herb had many health issues over the past years but his passing was related to a cancer problem. Born in Miramichi (Newcastle), he was the third son of the late Herbert L. and Greta B. Shephard. In addition to his wife of 48 years, he is survived by one brother, Sterling (Heather) of Plano, IL; sisters in law, Mary Shephard and Nancy Dealy (Don); brothers in law, Alastair Sobey and Ian Sobey (Karen); several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by another brother, Dr. Ken Shephard. Herb graduated from UNB in 1960 with a BSc in Civil Engineering. His early career was with the Pulp and Paper Industry. In 1972, he joined the Federal Civil Service in Fredericton. He retired in 1991, due to ill health. He was a life member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick. Herb was an active member of Nashwaaksis United Church which played an important part in his life. Herb expressed his concern for others by volunteering in various organizations: the Board of Directors for Provincial Artisans, York Manor, Boyce Market and the Association for Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick. He was a member of the Fredericton Golden Club where he enjoyed the fellowship of the many members. He was also member of UNB Alumni, the Atlantic Salmon Association, and the Fredericton Fish and Game Association. Until recently, Herb and Wilma enjoyed their camp at McGraw Brook on the Renous River. Many glorious days were spent fishing salmon and being visited by family and friends. In recent years he spent many days enjoying his favourite hobby, tying flies. Herb always had a keen interest in sports, both as a participant and an avid fan. He loved curling and spent many of his younger years as a competitive curler. As a fan he really enjoyed supporting his favourite university sports, the Varsity Reds Hockey and Basketball Teams. Wilma would like to thank the following health care professionals for their kind support and help over the years, Dr. Steven Hart, Dr. Liam Hickey, Dr. Gordon MacDonald, Dr. Jeffrey Moore, Dr. Mark MacMillan and Dr. Peter Fero. Although there will be no visitation by request, a Memorial Service will take place at Nashwaaksis United Church, 46 Main Street, Fredericton, NB on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 2 pm with Rev. Franklin Curtis officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will take place in the Miramichi Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Wilma and Herb Shephard Bursary at the University of New Brunswick, the Dr. Everett Chalmers Foundation or Fredericton Hospice.
