Obituary of Gerald Urquhart
It is with tremendous sadness we wish to announce the passing of Gerald Douglas Urquhart at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Saturday, September 13, 2014. Born on October 28, 1934 in Lower Kars, NB, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mildred (Vail) Urquhart. Jerry was a mentor to many from his days teaching in Kars, to leading the Skyline Acres Cub Scouts, and also teaching his kids and grandchildren, how to fish and hunt. He was a successful business man starting the Rainbow Car Wash back in 1968, while working for Honeywell. Jerry met the love of his life while working at NB Tel. Jerry used to chat with Luella, a telephone operator in Digby, NS, while testing the microwave towers in southern NB. Jerry loved spending time salmon fishing on the Miramichi River. He was past president and a lifetime member of the Thistle Fishing Club. He was a steward of the Miramichi River and a lifetime member of the Miramichi Salmon Association. Jerry enjoyed tying his own flies and spending time with his fishing buddies. He loved the Belleisle and spent as much time as possible, on the homestead in Lower Kars, from maple syrup season through to the fall harvest. Jerry also enjoyed spending time with his coffee club friends. He was a member of the Skyline Acres Baptist Church and served on the Board of Trustees.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Luella (Handspiker) and their children, Doug and Marilyn; Debbie and Mike Whalen; Brian and Jennifer; sister, Ruth Garnett. Jerry loved following the lives of his grandchildren, Amy, Katie, Emily and Andrew, Scott, Laura and Emma, Adam, Rowan and Will. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his infant brother, George.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at Skyline Acres Baptist Church, 135 Canterbury Drive on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 1pm with The Rev. Dr. Karl Csaszar officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made in Jerry’s memory to the Miramichi Salmon Association, Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.
