Obituary of Harold O�Brien
The passing of Harold “Bud” Edward O’Brien of Fredericton, NB, husband of Jeanne (Griffith) O’Brien occurred on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on June 19, 1922 in Saint John, NB, he was a son of the late George and Elizabeth (Brown) O’Brien.
Bud received his early education at Saint Vincent’s Boy’s School and graduated from Saint Vincent’s High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the R.C.A.F. and served overseas with 6 Group Bomber Command and in the later part of the war with Coastal Command. Following his discharge from the Air Force he enrolled at U.N.B. where he received his BSc. Forestry in 1950. During his forestry career he served with the Federal Department of Forestry in the North West Territories, with Howard Smith Paper Mills in Montreal and with Forest Protection Ltd in Campbellton. He and his family then moved to Fredericton where he retired from the Department of Natural Resources as Director of Human Resources. He was a life member of the Registered Professional Foresters of N.B. and for many years he and his wife Jeanne were avid bowlers with the Seniors Bowling League. Bud was also an active member of Saint Theresa’s Church, for many years delivered Meals on Wheels and was very involved with the Fredericton Seniors Workshop with whom he served as Secretary. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #4, Branch.
Besides his wife, Bud is survived by his sons, Michael (Anne) of Fredericton, NB, Patrick (Deborah) of Moncton, NB, Timothy (Joanne Lacey) of Truro, NS, Gary (Marisol) of Nanaimo, BC; daughter, Elizabeth of Ottawa, ON; grandchildren Lindsay, Alyssa, Lauren, Maggie, Rachel, Mary, Laura, Mariah, Marlise, Molly, Troy and Rhianna; great grandchildren, Walker and Avrie; sisters, Rena Moran of Saint John, NB, Doreen Hatfield of Kingston, ON; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Bud was predeceased by his brother, Sholly Doherty.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated from St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 11 am with Father John Jennings as celebrant. Interment will take place in St. Anthony’s cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Fredericton Seniors Workshop.
