Obituary of Merle Leroy Ross

Merle Leroy Ross, age 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 25, 1944 in Holtville, New Brunswick, to Irvine and Nellie (Case) Ross.

Merle was a well-known member of his community of Boiestown. He operated the Esso Service Station, which was a family-owned business, for many years. He owned a trucking company, Merle Ross & Son, employing several community members over the years. He was a licensed welder, as well as a member of the Upper Miramichi Volunteer Fire Department and the Landmark Lodge No. 51.

Merle is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Zona (Black); daughter Krista (Terry) of Fredericton, daughter Kim (Jake) of Priceville, and son Kyle (Leah) of Saint John; grandchildren Shawn, Scott and Nikki MacKay, Jake Jr. and Jax Storey, Alex, Ryan and Katelyn Tracy-Gould, Nathan, Gavin and Sophie Ross, as well as great grandchildren Adyson and Madilyn MacKay, Summer McAllister, Bella & Tosh Sauvageau. He is also survived by his brothers Irvine (Shirley), Floyd (Carol), and Wendall Ross, as well as several in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Ellis (Christine), Darold (Peggy), Glen (Yvonne), Gordon, Vaughan (Jackie), Kenneth (Claudette), Cassius, Marie (Bob) Young and infant sister, Brenda.

Merle will always be remembered by his friends and family for being kind, generous, and having a great sense of humour.

His family would like to thank the staff at the DECH emergency, cardiac care and intensive care units for their excellent care during Merle’s time in the hospital.

Visitation will take place at the Miramichi Valley Chapel, 7681 Route 8, New Bandon) on Tuesday, January 7th from 12pm-2pm, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2pm. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony at the Upper Miramichi Lions Club. For those who wish, remembrances can be made to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation.
