Mike’s passing ends an exciting, decades-long era in my life. I’m sure for many Acadians down along St. Mary’s Bay as well. An era characterized by white water canoeing and running rapids on rivers in Atlantic Canada, Ontario and up north in Labrador.
Rivers like the:
1.Sissiboo in Nova Scotia – every April when water levels were way up after spring runoff
2.Carleton in Nova Scotia also every spring,
3.Liscomb River in Nova Scotia but only once cuz it a bit tame,
4.Four days from Kejimkujik Lake, down across Lake Rossingnol, and all the water courses through to the South Shore,
5.The Carleton in New Brunswick; mild but worth the run for the big bag of fiddleheads picked along the way,
6.Ottawa River in Ontario, a widow maker for sure if you didn’t know what you were doing, and, finally,
7.The Churchill River in Labrador, another widow maker if not for Mike and me blowing the whistle on a poorly planned and scouted run – only one canoe lost of four on the trip, but no lives.
Some memories stick:
1.Waking up in a snow-covered tent up along the Churchill River in Labrador.
2.Meg sitting in cold water on the bottom of the canoe for greater stability as we ran some rapids on the Carleton in Nova Scotia. (Meg up from Australia on a world tour and daughter of close friend Paul Gunson down that way)
3.Peter, Meg’s brother on another trip, digging a pailful of clams on the St. Mary’s Bay flats and eating every one - raw
4.Mike laughing as my dog tried to get my false teeth on the grass near where I was sleeping on his lawn in Weymouth.
5.The rough-as-guts abandoned camp we slept in on the Carleton in Nova Scotia, on blankets that hadn’t been changed in years.
6.Jennifer, Mike and Kathy’s daughter, trying to sneak past us guys in the kitchen in Weymouth. And Jeff soaking up everything from his Dad's friends to do with canoeing and the outdoors, and destined to keep his Dad's outdoor spirit alive.
7.Annie staying the course for 24 years – and Kathy for years before that - in spite of macho Mike surfacing every now and then.
8.Greg dancing on top of a truck by the Carleton in Nova Scotia.
9.Young Dave and me coming off a ledge at the head of the Sissiboo and looking good in a picture, except for Dave’s ominous air brace
Mike has gone over the rainbow bridge and is holding hands with his guardian angel. But he is well remembered by me for a few exciting decades, and I know by other friends as well.
Eric

Mike and I met the summer of 1973 in Hearst Ontario. Mike had just graduated from UNB and I was starting my 4th year at U of T and took summer jobs for the MNR completing a regeneration survey. We had a great summer and became lifelong friends. I will always remember when he moved to The Pas and unfortunately we had already decided to move to Grande Prairie, but still threw a great farewell party.
I've attached one of my farourite pictures of Mike as he cooled down from the hot summer day.

Q: How did you meet Michael?
A: I first met Mike in the Pas ,Manitoba in the late 70's . We both worked for Manitoba Forest Co. and as young couples ,no children we would socialize on the weekends play hockey and barbecue. In 1999 on a motorcycle trip from Thunder Bay to the East Coast reunited with Mike in Nova Scotia. We kept in touch thru the internet for years, phoning each other at Xmas and birthdays and in 2011 and 2014 vacationed together in Las Vegas. We visited the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and the Mighty Sequoia trees of California. We also partied and took in the sites of old and new Vegas. In 2013 while touring trip to NFLD linked up again in Fredericton .Mike was a stand up guy and friend and will leave a large hole in the fabric of life of all who knew him.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family.
Mike was a good friend of our family. We shared many fond memories - camping at Keji, skiing at Martock, family get-togethers and holiday festivities. He will be remembered by us all. Gone too soon.
Thinking of you during these difficult days.
Sincerely,
Ann and Yvon Robichaud, Weymouth, N.S.
