Obituary of Manley William Calhoun

Please share a memory of Manley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Manley William Calhoun, at home in Fredericton on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. He was born in Gordon Vale, NB on July 31, 1924. He was the son of the late Alexander “Sandy” Calhoun and the late Susan (Black) Calhoun.

Manley is survived by his loving and devoted wife of nine years, Darlene (Stickles) Calhoun; daughter, Susan of Saint John; son, Larry (Mary) of Fredericton; step-sons, Albert (Melanie) Price of London, England, Thomas (Karla) Price of Hampton and William (Cindy) Price of Montreal; seven step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by wife Faye; son, Brent; brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond (Helen) Calhoun, Reginald (Mary) Calhoun, Lorne (Nellie) Calhoun, Joseph (Lorena) Calhoun and Glen (Glenna) Calhoun; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean (Frederick) Perkins, Florence (Harold) MacLellan, Lois (Arthur) Gilks, Mary (Harold) Hamilton, Ferne (Carl) Rickard and Aida (Stuart) Spencer; and several nieces and nephews.

Manley grew up on the family farm in Gordon Vale and experienced all the activities associated with that life, including woodcutting, tending to cows, working in the fields, and playing practical jokes on visiting relatives. He enlisted in the Army at age 19 and, following basic training in Brandon Manitoba and deployment to England, landed at Juno Beach on 12 June 1944, later joining the 6th Anti-Tank Regiment. At war’s end he remained in Europe for a year with the Allied occupational force. Manley was recently awarded a Queen’s Jubilee Medal and the French Legion of Honour, for his wartime service. Following the war, after several years of working for CNN, he began his career with the Canadian Armed Forces, working at bases in McGivney, Renous and Gagetown before retiring in 1987.

Following his retirement, Manley enjoyed many activities, including building a camp on his woodlot on Parker’s Ridge, making maple syrup each spring, woodworking and, later in life, doing puzzles on his iPad.

Visitation will be held at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 1-2 pm, followed by a Funeral Service at 2 pm, with Rev. Stephen Ashfield officiating. Interment will take place at the Parker’s Ridge Cemetery following the Funeral Service. Donations in Manley’s memory may be made to the Parker’s Ridge Community Church Group Inc.

Manley had many wonderful care providers during the last several weeks of his life.
