Q: What was Ryan really good at?
A: My classroom was across from Ryan's at Nestor Elementary School. What I noticed about Ryan right away is how good he was with making connections with kids in classroom. He had an ability to make all his kids feel seen and welcomed. He was able to cultivate joy and excitement in his classroom. I really enjoyed our hallway chats throughout the day. He will be deeply missed.

I had the pleasure of working with Ryan at Nestor Elementary in Coquitlam, BC some years ago. We taught the same grade groups and Ryan clearly showed his connection with kids on so many levels. I especially remember him buying old-fashioned candy for all 3 classes during a field trip to the Burnaby Village Museum. Ryan's continuous dedication, warm personality, and smiles will be fondly remembered.

Ryan and I rode shotgun in each other's journeys in becoming teachers at SFU. Ryan's ability to translate his charisma with adults into his interactions with teenagers and young children was impeccable. We often had lunch together, talking music and books as we grinded our way through our teacher education program for a year.
What I loved about Ryan was his attitude as a creative and as a person - he was both the funniest trash talker and the most eloquent advocate of what he considered to be art, whether it was literature, film or music. Despite living and working in Vancouver, he never lost his Eastern Canadian attitude, and it was one of my favourite things about him.
I'll miss you, Ryan.

Ryan "Mr. H" made an enormous lasting impression on my son. He was a welcomed familiar face when they both started the same year at Baker Drive Elementary (after both coming from RC Mac). Ryan made that year the most special school year, and was someone Cole really looked up to - "Mr. H gets me, and told me being called weird is ok, we're all weird".
I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing, and send my sincere condolences to his family and friends. - Kim

It was our pleasure to work with Ryan at Baker Drive Elementary, in Coquitlam, BC. Even though his time here was short, he left a lasting impression. His larger than life personality is one we will never forget. He is also remembered for his suspenders and his tie! The pictures below were from the day the staff all dressed up as Ryan!
The students still talk fondly about their time with Mr Hoben. The Baker Drive Community will never forget the way he made us feel! Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Much love,
Baker Drive Community

Cathie, Randy, Todd, Erin and families,
My sincere condolences to all of you on the passing of Ryan. What a brave young man to venture away from home to pursue his creative gifts and find his true passion! It is clear, he was a very thoughtful and supportive person. Take pride in this as these are a direct reflection of the love and understanding he received as a member of your family! You gave him the opportunity to spread his wings and become the incredible human being he was meant to be. A life well lived but ultimately too short! I hope you will be uplifted by the support and love from others, your memories, and the stories you share of Ryan as you learn to live without his earthly presence.

To Ryan’s family and close friends —
When I was living in Vancouver, at the same time as Ryan, I was dating one of his friends. Their friend group was quite tight knit, intimidating, and not always the warmest or most open to integrate with. Ryan was always so kind to me, welcoming and funny. At a time when I truly needed it and appreciated it so much. For example, he was the only one of my ex boyfriend’s friends to dance with me at a wedding of someone in their friend group. He always took time to say hello to me and to connect. I am so grateful that before Ryan died, I was able to thank him for this and tell him how much his kindness meant to me. I am so sorry that he is no longer here.

I only met Ryan a hand full of times after he moved back to Fredericton, but working at the skate shop I’d hear stories, him and Brian had a good connection, he was so kind to his friends was never down even after radiation treatments, never once saw him frown never once had anything negative to say (always quick with a joke or the perfect ice breaker) . Purest form of how to be a New Brunswicker, to his family my heartfelt condolences, to his friends may you always remember the good, there’s tons to remember. Rest in Peace Ryan, may you watch over all of the ones you loved most.

Sitting on a bench surround by friends sitting on skateboards laughing and telling stories while the scent of tobacco circled the globes, while he had the same dexterity and flexibility of a marshmallow on a skateboard he will forever be an integral part of the fredericton skateboarding community.

For most of my life Ryan was always bigger than life and just the coolest dude ever. I've looked up to and tried to emulate him as long as I can remember. One very clear and core memory for me would have been in '95 or 96 when he was living in Montreal with Brenda and Kenny. I was there hanging out and we were talking about music, he grilled me on what my favorite "buzz cuts" were at the time. After I answered he told me my choices were not so bad and fished a Pennywise About Time cassette out from his collection and gave it to me saying he thought I'd dig it. I popped it in on my train ride back to the city and absorbed every word on the jacket while I did. He probably never realized it, but that one act of musical kindness influenced my taste in music for the following thirty years and counting. I'll miss you buddy, love Adam.

One of my favorite memories that I have of Ryan was around his 18th or 19th birthday, we were attending a family reunion or celebration, I walked up to him with all the confidence a kid could have and I straight up asked "Now that you're an adult do I have to call you Uncle Ryan?" With a warm, kind smile, and a reassuring chuckle, he hugged me and explained that's not how it works and he would always remain my cousin. He didn't make me feel any other way but loved. It was a moment I will never forget.
I will miss you Ryan, you were truly a one in a million person with a heart that nothing can be compared too.
