It is with heavy hearts that the family of Derek James Horsnell announce his passing on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital (DECRH). Born in Fredericton, NB on January 26, 1957, he was a son of John and Ann (Jamieson) Horsnell.

As the owner of City Spring Service (1998) Ltd. Derek was dedicated to his shop. He never took a vacation and even cancer could not make him take a sick day. Derek was an easy-going, good-humoured, and strong man with a love for the simple lake life surrounded by family and friends. He was always open to a drop in visit for a beer and conversation. Known for his ability to doctor-up a recipe he loved spending time in the kitchen, cooking and baking enough to feed a crowd. Derek firmly believed that more was always better, whether in the length of a movie or in how many items to purchase. A skilled jokester, he loved playing tricks on his grandchildren and making them laugh. He will be missed immensely.

Derek had a large circle of friends. The family would like to express their appreciation to Timmy, Danny, Tom, Lynne, Dale, Mary Lou, and Pam (Weezer) for going above and beyond over this past year to support our efforts in enabling Derek to live life as he desired while battling cancer. They would also like to extend a note of gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the Radiology department (SJRH), the Oncology department and the Palliative care unit at the DECRH, as well as the support from Extra Mural.

In addition to his parents, Derek is also survived by his wife, Susan; his son, Jason (Rebeca); his step-daughters, Andrea (Michael) and Krista (Dave); grandchildren, Kayla, Megan, Jordan, Michael, Rachel, Jackson, Austin, Asher and Ember; great-grandson, Kayson; siblings, Michael (Mary Lou) and Sandra (late Jim); as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Sunday, August 18, 2024 from 2 – 4 pm and 6 – 8 pm. A Memorial Service will take place in York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Monday, August 19, 2024 at 2 pm with Rev. Debbie Edmondson officiating. Pallbearers are Tim Bowlen, Dan Smith, Tom Brooks and Dale Astle. Interment to take place in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery Extension, Fredericton, NB. Reception to follow in York Funeral Home's Fireside Room. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
