Please share a memory of Elsie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Evans, Elsie Elizabeth

Elsie passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on April 22, 2024. Born on March 9, 1934, in Fredericton, NB, she was the daughter of the late Laura E. Carr and Clarence E. Carr.

Elsie was a Registered Nurse; she was a graduate of the Oromocto Superior School – Class of 1953. She graduated from the Victoria Public Hospital Nursing School in 1956 as a Registered Nurse and was President of the VPH Alumni from 1996-99. Elsie was a partner in Lynwood Evans (Esso) Ltd. She also loved to read. She was a member of Nashwaaksis United Church, Fredericton, NB. Elsie was on the Executive Committee and was Chairman of Pastoral Care.

Elsie loved her family time.  She enjoyed summers at Harvey Lake and family camping trips. In addition to her family adventures, she loved traveling around the countryside with best friends Donald (Peanut) and Marion Clowater and, in her later years, on bus trips with her friend Mary Holland.  She looked forward to going to Saturday morning breakfast and was always ready to dine out with family and friends. She was an avid reader who enjoyed several genres of literature.  She had a soft spot for all animals and considered pets to be members of her family.  She loved long conversations with family who lived away.

Elsie lived in many places growing up as her father needed to relocate to various locations for his line of work.  As a young girl, she had many experiences outside a normal childhood. For example, when she lived in Quebec, she was a translator and assistant for a doctor as a young child. This experience may have influenced her choice to be a Registered Nurse. She lived during WW 2 and became an adept mechanic.  Her mechanical skills were valued by her neighbours whom she helped throughout her life. She departed her career as a Registered Nurse to help her husband start and grow a successful family business that continued 60 years.

Elsie welcomed everyone, and most especially her children’s friends. She made sure they had lots of good food to eat and often a place to sleep.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Heather Bird (Bill) and Karrie Evans; son, Vaughan Evans (Marilyn); grandchildren, Sandy Bird (Karen), Adam Bird (Trena), Samantha Evans, Abigail Evans, and Tabitha Evans; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Bradley, Gwyneth, and Hayden Bird; brother-in-law, Ronald Evans (Sherrie); godson, Timothy Clowater; and several nieces and nephews.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Caleb 'Lynwood' Evans; parents, Laura E. Carr and Clarence E. Carr; sisters, Marilyn Carr and Constance Carr; brother, Vincent Carr (Bettyann); and sister-in-law, Donna Arnold (John).
