Obituary of Herbert William Rees
Herbert William Rees (1951–2025)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Herbert William Rees on Thursday, 30th October 2025, at Dr Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton. Born in Lachine, Québec, in 1951, to the late David Alanson John Rees and Lilly Mary Rees (née Godin), Herbert was predeceased by his beloved sister, Christina Marion Rees, his brother, David Alanson John Rees Jr., and his nephew, John Rees.
Herb is survived by his devoted wife, Bonnie Mae Rees (née Naugler), of New Maryland, New Brunswick, and sister-in-law Barbara Rees (née Booker), of Phoenix, Arizona, USA; his sons Timothy (wife Tasha) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Andrew (wife Heather) of Wellington, New Zealand; his daughter Katherine of New Maryland; his niece Victoria Rees Woodrow (husband Kelly) and their family; and his cherished granddaughters Olivia, Violet, and Winnie, all of whom he loved dearly.
Herb graduated from the University of New Brunswick, Faculty of Forestry, where he was awarded the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick Silver Medal, showing at an early age that he’s smarter than he looks! After graduating, Herb started his professional career with Agriculture Canada at the Fredericton Research Station as a soil scientist. He mapped soil profiles across much of New Brunswick, and later got involved in studies on soil erosion and water runoff in potato fields. His work significantly contributed to the understanding of the province’s agricultural landscapes and soil conservation practices.
In retirement, Herb applied his scientific precision to more personal pursuits — restoring antiques he had acquired through his wife’s enthusiastic treasure hunting at auctions and yard sales. Together, they shared a love of craftsmanship, history, and discovery.
Herb faced his health challenges with bravery and dignity, always the gentleman with a heartfelt word or a “thank you” for every kindness shown. His dry wit brought many fond chuckles, and his sayings will echo in our minds for many years to come.
His absence will leave a large void for those who loved him.
At Herb’s request, a private family service will be held. Interment will occur at the family plot in Douglas Rural Cemetery, Nashwaaksis, alongside his parents and siblings. Instead of flowers, friends and family are encouraged to make a donation in Herbert’s memory to a New Brunswick charity of their choice. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
