Hay, Velma Janet

The passing of Velma Janet Hay of Stanley, NB, wife of the late Ferdinand Hay, occurred on October 9, 2025 at Nashwaak Villa.  Born on June 8, 1937 in Maple Grove, NB, she was the daughter of the late Maudie (Porter) and Raymond Merrill. 

Velma is survived by daughter’s: Sheila Hay (Dan) of Stanley and Carla Lee Hay of Fredericton; grandchildren: Curtis (Jessica), Carter (Jesseca), Alicia (Mark), Jenna, Austin, Natasha, Craig, Ryan and Keith; sister: Joan Merrill; brother: Neil Merrill, along with great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and extended family members.


Besides her husband, Velma was predeceased by her son’s: Gary and Rocklyn Hay; daughter, Gloria Hay; grandson, Garrett; granddaughter’s: Chantal and Wittney; brother’s Dell, Bert and Floyd Merrill and sister: Norma Toon.

 

At the age of 16 Velma married the love of her life Ferdinand. They were married 37 years when Ferdinand passed away in 1991. They lived in Williamsburg all their life, in the house that her late husband built. She took get pride in their home and everything had a place and was in its place in their home. Velma was a stay-at-home mother and loved to cook, knit and also made a few quilts. She was a very private person. She cared deeply for her family and family gatherings were what made her the happiest. She lost many that she loved but always managed to be able to joke and enjoy life.

 

The family would like to thank the staff at Nashwaak Villa for the exceptional care they shared with Velma for the last 6 years. Private interment will take place at Williamsburg Community Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to The United Church of Canada, Williamsburg Community Cemetery or charity donor’s choice.  Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
