I was interviewed by Charlie a number of times while I was a Moncton City Councillor. He had an understanding of municipal government so he knew the right questions to ask but was always fair and his interviews were not a contest to see who could outsmart or trap someone. Regretfully, the old Times Transcript is a shadow of its former self and Charlie would not like what it has become. Rest in peace.

Charlie was a very special guy in my life, a cousin who was like the big brother I never had; a friend, a mentor, a protector. He taught me to play chess and play pool, and he kindly suffered through being tasked with babysitting me when I spent summers with his family in St. John. He had the best smile in the world.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Charlie's passing. I had known him from the time I was in high school, and then university, and then when I broke into journalism as a green-behind-the-ears reporter. Charlie was always very kind and offered advice and help. We became good friends, although we lost touch after he retired and moved from Moncton. My heart goes out to his family.

I have been out of country al month and just read Charles obit in the now 3 day per week Times Transcript.
I was a Moncton City Councillor from 1986 to 1998 and Charlie often handled the "municipal beat". He was a very good reporter. He called a spade and spade and had a great "bullshit sensor" but was always polite and I never saw him upset.
He was truly a professional news reporter!
Sorry I could not attend his funeral . My condolences to his family and friends.

Although I did not know Charlie well, I did meet him through Jaan. He impressed me as a gentle soul and was always thankful for any little gesture. My sympathy to his family.

The world of journalism has lost an important person.
After graduating from Saint John High School, Charlie entered the arts program in September, 1964 when UNBSJ accepted students for the first time. Four years later, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from UNB Fredericton.
Shortly after he started his journalism career with the Saint John papers. He later worked with other papers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He retired as a reporter with the Moncton paper. In his career he interviewed many important people.
I guess he has been called to report on events in heaven. Carry on with your pen and pad above, Charlie.
Your long time school friend, Jaan

My deepest sympathy goes to his family.
I worked with Charles at the Moncton Times & Transcript for about three decades, and I have many heart-warming memories of his friendship.
He always had concern for others, and always pitched in to assist co-workers. His integrity and commitment to journalism was unmatched.
Rest well friend,
Dwayne Tingley
