Thinking back over memories with Grampie I feel so blessed to have so many of them. I spent a lot of my childhood at their home. I have fond memories of grampie pushing me on the swings at the park, and getting stopped to talk to yet another neighbour (usually named Bob) while walking with Grampie.
My most dearest memories though, are the times we spent in the music room. He taught me how to sing, hold a mic, how to be on a stage and most importantly, how to worship Jesus and give glory to Him. I am so thankful Grampie took the time to teach me how to sing, but I will be eternally thankful for the lessons he taught me in my faith. I will never forget sitting beside Grampie on the side of the blue room bed and praying the sinner’s prayer with him. Grampie was always ready to talk about Jesus, and he lived it out too. I’m so thankful for the life he lived and the love he shared with all of us. We are so blessed.
All my love,
Bobbi-jo

So many memories to treasure but for me and my children it was lived daily as we lived here in the Fredericton area all our lives. Dad was a great babysitter along with mom. He was a dedicated grampie, with visits to the park to teaching singing skills. Dad had a good life , as Mom says he did so many things he loved, trucking, singing and painting. We have a
beautiful memory of his induction into the "NB Country Music Hall of Fame". All the family together.
Another beautiful memory is my son's wedding in PEI where as a family we were together in a BnB and had our own after party and danced and sang to a karaoke machine.
Love you forever Dad, see you on the other side where your mind is clear again.

To My Beloved Grampie
To the man who showed me how cool Bob Ross was before he was cool
To the man who will eat your birthday supper without you if you are late
To the grampie who I could get away with running in the house with if I just did one less lap than my cousin Jimmy
To the man who taught me what it means to defend your family
To the man who showed 15 year old me empathy when I'd had too much moving around
To the man who made 6-year-old me question whether or not I was made out of prunes
To the only person I know who thought playing Lego was a noisy activity
To the man who showed me what it means to have music as a life long passion
To the man who made sideburns look good
To the man who showed me the magic of cream in cornflakes
To the man who walked on the outside of the sidewalk to keep me safe, even when I was grown up
To the grampie who was ready with a smile, a hug, and a kiss on the cheek
To the grampie whose love I've never doubted
To the only grampy I've ever known
To the grampie I've loved for 1/3 of his life, and all of mine
Your loving granddaughter,
Rachel

There is so much I could write in this tribute book for my dad. I have shared many highlights in his Obituary so I have decided to contribute some special memories here from his and mom's visits to Nova Scotia when we lived there. They loved their excursions to Nova Scotia during those twenty years. Dad was outside his domain and saw his time there with us as a bit of an adventure. We scouted around the various parts of Nova Scotia that we lived in and I saw another side of dad that I had never seen. We made fires and roasted hot dogs on St. Mary's Bay, explored remote islands off of Digby Neck, hunted for model trucks and dad even joined our worship team one Sunday morning, playing base ! On one occasion he and mom arrived on his Harley Davidson Motorcycle. The most precious visit was in June, 1980 when ,on Father's day, dad made his decision to follow Christ public in the Baptist Church we were pastoring ! His life took a new turn on another Highway that day. I love you dad and I will see you again at the end of life's highway here for me.

While in Seminary, I held a student pastorate at Acaciaville African Baptist Church, near Digby. On Father’s Day, June 15, 1980, Reid and Iva were visiting us. At the end of my sermon, I gave an alter call. I asked for anyone who wanted to receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour to please raise their hand. Reid’s hand literally shot up in the air. Next, I asked if those who raised their hands would like to come to the front of the church as a public sign of their acceptance of Jesus. He immediately stood up and walked to the front. Sharon and Iva sat there in surprise, while deacon Wallace Bailey came and put his arm around Reid’s shoulder. I led him through a prayer of confession. Later Reid told me, that Jesus had spoken to him. He told me that the Lord had said to him “Steven is going to ask for people to raise their hand if they want to receive me and you are going to raise your hand” God knew that Reid had already made the decision in his heart and only needed the opportunity to express it publicly.
Reid had been reading the Bible regularly and was pondering his eternal destiny. He wasn’t sure that if he died that he would go to heaven. He was especially concerned because he thought his family members would be and he wouldn’t be. It wasn't the “eloquent” preaching of a second-year seminary student but his own Bible study and the love of family that had stirred him to ask eternal questions.
Jesus said ..., “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; John 11:25
The Apostle Paul wrote: For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom.8:38,39)
Reid had come to believe that Jesus is the resurrection and the life and the moment he made that confession public, he experienced the Presence of the Lord in a way that assured him of that truth. The other night, we were talking about the changes in him that we all witnessed. Sharon said he was like a light bulb. It was not long before he started singing country Gospel music and witnessing to everybody he could about his love for Jesus and the love he knew Jesus had for them. Reid was not only convinced that Jesus is the resurrection and life but like Paul, he became convinced that nothing could separate him from the love of God – not even death not even dementia.

will always treasure the moments and memories I have with my Grampy. I was fortunate enough to live with him throughout my grade 4 school year at park place elementary.
I have always admired his self discipline, and consistency is his routine and values, and his way admiration and love for Grammy has been an inspiration to me in my life. I will never forget when he told me he would rather be three hours early than 1 minute late. As a kid I found that silly at first, but over time I came to realize that his commitment to this and to his other values and principles are a big part of what laid the foundations for such a large and loving family to blossom the way it has over the generations.
I used to love to watch him make music and paint, and go about his daily activities. He taught me to play Acoustic guitar, with a country twang, which has always stayed with me, and once let me choose where he would paint a mountain in one of his paintings I was watching him create.
I know I will continue to learn from him as life goes on, through the impact he has had on my life and continues to make through everyone who he influenced. I will miss you Grampy, but I can find peace knowing you will be waiting for us in Heaven.
Love
Your grandson, Aaron

Reid was physically strong for his age, according to me, and I think Iva would agree. Reid and I would go for a walk and Reid liked walking in the middle of the street. I would take his arm and try to get him to the side of the street. It was next to impossible. When I first met Reid, he could still play the guitar. I know that he missed being able to play and sing. I had great surprise and dismay when I heard that Reid died. His time in the hospital was very short. One thing I know is that Reid Merritt is as free as the birds that he liked to watch. His mind is now sound because he is totally and completely healed.
Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. This is my prayer and blessing to the family, extended families and friends.

Sending our deepest sympathies to Iva and family. Reid was a wonderful and sweet person. So genuine always happy to see you. I was a teenager when Reid came in our lives. He was the lead guitar player in my Dad’s band, “Lew McInnis and the Rhythm Makers”. They had a close circuit television show out of Woodstock. Reid sang at both my Dad and sisters funerals. He sang a song my Dad wrote at my Dad’s funeral. He always spoke of my Dad every time I met him. He called me by my childhood nickname “Edie”.
Iva and Reid came to York Manor to help celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday. We so much appreciated their delightful presence that day.
We will miss Reid but he will always be in our hearts.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you now and in the coming days.

Dear Iva and Family,
I got to know Reid back in the 70's when my husband, the late Gerald McCarty, played keyboards with the Golden Bel-Aires, for six years, every Thursday and Saturday. Back then I only met you and Sharon for the first time, as you attended a New Years dance. In the group at the time was Wayne Nightengale, lead guitar/vocals, Reid, and Jim Covney on drums.
Talked to him many times as he made his way to Park Street School and I would be picking up my grandchildren.
My last encounter with Reid was two summers ago, as he loved to walk back then, but not far. He had walked from Longwood, down Fulton Avenue, and was in front of my house on Pugh Street. I drove him back home and had a few laughs and conversation in your driveway.
Imagine, 70 years of marriage, is amazing, and Gerry and I attended your 50th. You and your Family have been blessed. Take care of one another.
