I loved visiting Jon in his beautiful house and listening to him sing and play his magical guitar. Fond memories indeed.

Jon built his first steel string guitar for me over the winter of 1972, in his cabin in remote Cross Creek, without the benefit of hydro. He made many of his tools by hand. The guitar is still playable after half a century and is in remarkably good condition. He was a master craftsman. Although I have had minimal contact with Jon over the years since, I will always remember trudging through the snow to his cabin to pick up the guitar. My daughter has had recent contact with him over Facebook. My condolences go out to his family and close friends.

My condolences to Jon's family.
Jon was a true renaissance man, an artist, luthier, musician, master builder and more.
His ear, eye and skilled hands unique among many. A man of deep conviction.
I treasure the memories of our travels and times together in Wappingers Falls N.Y and vists to Cross Creek.

Dear Soderman family,
I got to know Jon when he and John Reilly took on the job of jacking up one end of our century plus home and laying a new foundation. We enjoyed their humour and constant story telling and were very grateful for their appreciation and valuing of old homes, which have their idosyncracies and tell their tales through the kinds of nails and beams they were put together with.
Jon returned the next year to begin replacing all the windows in our house, often accompanied by one of his daughters, an able assistant. He also replaced our old side porch with beams from trees blown down in the Douglass front yard in Nashwaak Bridge and milled by Terry Young. Jon would have chuckle with me about how keen my husband Peter was to pay him the moment Jon passed him an invoice.
Jon began inside renovation work for Luke, taking down walls in the wing of the house which Elizabeth Munroe had converted from a store, and then post office. to a one bedroom apartment for Peter and me. The wood panelling Jon installed in the more open concept space inspired us to have the main house kitchen spruced up with a wood paneled ceiling.
Jon kindly checked in with me after Peter died and gave me a hand with details of tightening up a country home for winter. This included a check of our scrap lumber for bitsto be used in nailing down tarps over our porch, sheltering the winter firewood.
The next year Jon replaced our old double front doors and took those doors, which he pointed out the craftsmanship in, and installed them in his own home.
On one visit Jon brought me a copy of his CD Under Again and talked about how a music fan from Japan had tracked him down and asked for permission to reproduce the CD.
Jon would ask how I was doing, living on my own and understood the comfort I have in Peter's presence in all the daily reminders of his life in this house. Later Jon talked about how he treasured being able to be at home for his children as they would arrive off the school bus.
Jon's love and care for his family made him worry about what future they might face, with the changing environment. During his most recent visit, he seemed less worried and more just treasuring time with his family.
I last saw Jon at the Sept 2022 Nashwaak Idol concert; he was quietly and radiantly delighted to watch one of his daughters perform, singing and accompanying herself on a guitar crafted by Jon.
Thank you for sharing Jon with so many folks on the Nashwaak, including ourselves.
Jean Burgess, Luke deMarsh and Peter deMarsh, who may once again be enjoying Jon's storytelling.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to Isobel and the entire family on this horrible loss. I met Jon at a random kitchen party in 1981 or 82 at his neighbour's house out in "The Creek". I had no idea that we would run into each other so MANY times over the next several decades. Just a lovely gentleman and fantastic entertainer... I was so happy to chat with him for a little while at the Nashwaak this year, and I will never forget his show at Broken Record a few months ago... not knowing it would be his last public performance.
I will miss him dearly, and he will NEVER be forgotten.
Rest Easy Jon... thank you.

The end of the road well traveled from my old friend Jon. I always told him he should write a book about his unique life. He said everybody has a story to tell!! I replied that he had a life full of interesting twists and turns. Jon will be greatly missed but certainly not forgotten by anyone his life touched!! Sympathy to all the family. I only wish I could hear him sing one more time, "Don't You Bother Me Sam"!!

To Jon's children, my sincere condolences. I really only knew your dad through the way his children talked about him, and I know he was a fine, and intelligent man with many talents which he shared with the world.
Your memories of him will console you in times to come.
Mya, if you're looking for him, search your heart. You will find him there.

My deepest sympathy to you all in the loss of your father. I knew Jon only slightly, as the father of students in our school and for his reputation as a fine carpenter and musician. During the past year or so we have had several conversations about cats and cat care. He showed me a picture of the albino kitten born at his place and was anxious to provide her with special care. I am going to make a donation to Carma (Cat Rescue Maritimes) in Jon's memory.
May you be comforted now and in the years ahead by warm memories of your dad.
Sincerely,
Sandra MacBean
