Heartfelt condolences on the passing of our dear friend, Richard. His spirit was filled with gentleness and a zest for seeking new adventures; qualities that defined his persona from the time our friendship began in 1970. He will be profoundly missed but surely remembered, especially recalling the memories forged during an unforgettable odyssey to New York City in April 1987. May he rest in peace.

Gone too soon, my dear friend. Roger, as some of us old friends know him, or Richard, as he re-invented himself in the 1980's, was a truly unique character. An adventurer (he still went to the Magic Forest festival this year), a lover of exotic creatures (his Boa Constrictor, tarantula and giant cockroach, among others), a collector of rare coins, a great fan of psychedelic and prog rock, he had a vivid imagination. He was a storyteller who would blend hard truth with wild fantasy, give an incisive character study with a few odd observations and often had a sly humour and twinkle in his eye.
Roger loved Fredericton and even had a Facebook group on F'ton history and events. He actively participated in the opposition to the destruction of historic Officer's Square and other heritage campaigns. He was a good friend and a warm soul. He was very welcoming to my German wife, Eva, when we lived in F'ton and often took us on trips to the lakes and parks around NB. Although he did not need to (he was financially astute), he continued to work at UPS in his later years because he loved his co-workers and considered them his second family. I'll miss my old friend greatly.
Our condolences to his family and friends, Don Van Wart and Eva Mehne-Van Wart
