I am sorry to learn of Brigid's passing and my condolences to Janet Toole, Hannah, Elizabeth and Rachel. I well remember afternoons with the Tooles, and Grants, in Fredericton and Grand Manan, when Brigid taught me how to make fudge on one occasion. What a great person she was.

I first experienced the wonder of Brigid, Dick, and Hannah’s cavernous house as a small child. I remember marionette shows, the hum and mill of voices and bodies with music playing and the clink of glasses above and around me at parties hosted there. Brigid’s work, everywhere present, made the space alive to anyone present.
Later, as a grownup returning to Fredericton with my two children, Brigid and Dick had us to supper and helped scrub out and set up my new kitchen. We all made designs with wax and dye on eggs at their home at Easter while the latest political moves at every level were chewed over. In the spring melt, we all went to sugar off at King’s Landing. In the evenings of our first few months in Fredericton, Simone would go over to practice for piano lessons and visit with Shady the dog. She loved it there. The sense of broader community and care Brigid offered in the gesture of opening her home made the transition easier for all of us.
Brigid herself was always candid, steady, serious in her positions (always well-informed) and ready with rapier wit, direct gaze, and a warm smile. She inhabited her full self like few others, grounded in what matters most: loving Dick and Hannah, but also the world around her and the community itself. She had humility, and was not self-serving. In quiet, myriad ways, she contributed to the flowering of Fredericton and certainly made the worlds of everyone in her orbit richer for the association.
My last visit with Brigid was at a tea party for 3 (plus dogs and cats) in the first exuberance of spring in Hannah’s wild garden. It was work for Brigid to get out there and back to the house, but she was happy and determined to to it. The table was set with a tablecloth and proper tea set, and we dined on tea with all the trimmings and muffins - consumed with relish. There was laughter in the garden that day, funny anecdotes, and queries after Trynne and Simone. It was a magical last visit, and I will miss her terribly.
Hannah - know you’re loved and that there is a community of care around you, too.

Hannah,
My deepest condolences on the passing of your parents. I have many fond memories of having dinners together at the pink house with them, along with seeing the Christmas tree that your dad would put up on your house every year. They were very special people and they will be missed.
Take Care

I was very sorry to read the news about Brigid. My memories are from visits at New River Beach when she, Richard and Hannah were at the Grant cottage (just down the road from the Dory where my family was) and also visits to Grant family in Rothesay. I hope that Hannah knows how much her mum was loved. I pray she can feel the love of family and friends surrounding her at this time.

I am writing on behalf of Canadian Voice of Women for Peace to send our condolences to all of her family.
We want to express our gratitude for Brigid's lifelong work for a world of peace with justice. As a member since 1969 Brigid worked with VOW for more than 50 years and for the last decade or more she has contributed as a board member. She has been vital to bringing a New Brunswick connection to VOW's work. She will be very much missed.

My condolences to Hannah and family. Brigid was my teacher at the College as well as afterwards through UNB. She was a lovely, interesting person who taught many of us to see and to make marks with kindness, patience and insight. I have always greatly valued her teaching and her work as an artist. She lived an important life in our community and leaves a legacy.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Brigid's death, having spoken to her quite recently regarding the UNB lecture series in her father's name. It was a privilege to know Brigid, a distinguished artist, active (and sometimes opinionated) member of the university community, guardian of family history and always interesting conversationalist. I had been hoping to see her this summer when she was feeling better. I offer my condolences to her family and hope their memories of her are a comfort at this difficult time. You are in my thoughts.
